REPORTS TO: Director of Finance & Operations

SUPERVISES:  N/A

PURPOSE: The school nurse promotes health and safety, intervene with actual and potential health problems, provide case management services, and coordinate communication with families, appropriate school staff and the medical home or private healthcare provider.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Individual health care needs assessments for students
• Health care plan development, revision and evaluation including Emergency Action Plans, Individual Health
• Care Plans and health-related components of Individual Education Programs
• Direct provision of nursing health care services
• School staff instruction and supervision in provision of care for students with special health care needs
• Instruction and oversight for medication administration processes in schools
• Emergency and injury care, planning and training
• Communicable disease control and outbreak response in schools
• Assessment of school community health and safety issues
• Student screening for conditions that impact access to education, such as vision screening
• Member and resource for student assistance teams that develop health-related student accommodations
• Health-related community resource liaison for schools
• Maintain data and documentation, as appropriate.
• Must be able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, nebulizers, blood pressure machines,
• oxygen tanks, suction machines,
• Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a
• negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Medium Work
• Participate in school-wide professional development and seek continual feedback from Supervisor
• Performance of other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Registered as a nurse by the NC Board of Nursing. Must possess a School Nurse certificate upon employment.
• Master’s degree in nursing, and 5 years of professional nursing experience preferred, including knowledge of potential health problems of school-age and adolescent children, both healthy and those with chronic conditions and handicapping conditions; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
