The visual information specialist’s role is crucial. The FBI Laboratory seeks a highly qualified geospatial specialist to join its team of experts in crime scene documentation, advanced technology, and digital modeling at Quantico, VA. You’ll be responsible for creating and managing visual content for geospatial analysis, documenting crime scenes with precision, and producing high-quality multimedia presentations. Your expertise extends to a wide range of visual and analytical fields, including graphic design, Adobe software, and imagery analysis deployed in various settings.

SALARY LEVEL

Pay level for this position:

  • GS 9–12: $68,405.00–128,956.00

Salary shown is the base salary for the grade levels. Salary is also commensurate with professional experience.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Serve as an assistant to a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in applying the concepts, principles and methods of geospatial analysis, including aerial imagery, to produce products used for criminal, investigative, operational and law enforcement matters.
  • Deploy to major crime scenes and other locations as needed to provide crime scene documentation using technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and to act as an assistant to Drone pilot.
  • Apply design theories and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to create impactful map-based visualizations.
  • Utilize specialized software packages within the Esri ArcGIS Desktop suite (i.e., ArcOnline, ArcGIS Pro, etc.).

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

GS 9:

  • Apply electronic/graphic design publishing principles, practices, and standards to create original, informative and unbiased visual map graphics.
  • Use Esri ArcGIS Desktop (i.e., ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, etc.) to produce map-based graphics.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of GIS and remote sensing concepts, terminology, and techniques.
  • Develop basic skills in creating, sharing, and managing web services, web maps, and web applications in Esri ArcGIS Online (AGOL) and Portal environments.

GS 11:

In addition to the above:

  • Understand photogrammetry and aerial survey technologies.
  • Use imagery processing software (e.g., Pix4D, Drone2Map, HxMap).
  • Acquire basic knowledge of LiDAR production workflow, including point cloud classification and feature extraction.
  • Engage in 3D modeling using aerial imagery and LiDAR.
  • Generate multisensor (e.g., terrestrial and airborne LiDAR, survey data, airborne imagery, etc.), data-fusion-derived products.

GS 12:

In addition to the above:

  • Leverage ArcGIS Desktop and extensions (i.e., Image Analyst, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, etc.), Autodesk (i.e., AutoCAD, Revit, etc.), and Adobe Creative Suite (i.e., Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) to produce visual aids and products.
  • Document and assign product tasks involving a combination of data collection, diagram development, and digital scene construction.
  • Use equipment and technologies such as drone, LiDAR Scanning, and/or photogrammetry.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a Top Secret Clearance.
  • Must be willing to travel as required; have the flexibility to travel at short notice (e.g., within two hours) for uncertain periods (e.g., up to two weeks) including weekends and holidays.
  • This position may potentially be exposed to information or situations that depict violent acts or lewd images. The position may involve isolated working conditions.
  • As a condition of employment, DNA samples are required from all FBI personnel who interact with evidence or federal DNA database samples in Laboratory Division (LD) space or whose work requires them to enter LD examination areas where evidence or DNA database samples are processed or examined as part of the quality control process to detect sample/evidence contamination, in accordance with the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA), 75 Deferral Register (FR) 68932; 29 C.F.R. 1635.8(b)(6).
  • This position will require working as a crew member on a Cessna 206 aircraft.
  • Must undergo and complete a U.S. Government HAZMAT physical upon reporting for duty.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree or higher from a U.S.-accredited college or university.

Education may be substituted for specialized experience (SE) as follows:

  • GS 9: Applicant must have a master’s or equivalent graduate degree OR two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree (or LLB or JD, if related).
  • GS 11: Applicant must have a PhD OR equivalent doctoral degree OR three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree (or LLM, if related).
  • GS 12 and above: Education may not be substituted for SE at this grade level.

All degrees must be verified by submitting college transcripts.
