POSITION TITLE: Licensed Practical Nurse
RESPONSIBLE TO: Superintendent of Education
REPORTS TO: Principal(s) of Assigned School(s)
School Health Services Coordinator
JOB GOAL:
To assist the School Health Services Coordinator in providing health services to students
in an effort to promote their well being and to gain the maximum benefits from their
educational experience.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Licensed Practical Nurse shall hold a current license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) from the Alabama Board of Nursing. Previous nursing experience in community health or nursing of children is preferred. Must possess adequate communication skills and a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provides nursing care for students requiring special health procedures within the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Alabama.
2. Follows up on identified health problems with parents and other health professionals.
3. Refers parents, students, teachers, health agencies and individuals for health counseling to assigned School Nurse.
4. Records health data in the cumulative health record and keeps them current.
5. Contacts principal and Health Services Coordinator regarding crisis situations in the school.
6. Administers medications to students according to the approved policy/procedures.
7. Administers first aid to ill and injured students and staff according to policy/procedure.
8. Assists the School Nurse with screening for vision, hearing and scoliosis.
9. Participates in professional development activities.
10. Assists as a special education aide in meeting job requirements and performing duties as outlined in the special education aide job description as needed.
