Job Description

Provides administrative support to the Environmental Health section’s programs with Environmental Health Services, On-Site Water Protection, and Food/Lodging/Institution Program. Each program requires assistance through data capture and compilation, monitoring onsite wastewater systems per 15A NCAC 18E, collection of water samples as mandated, and food handler education. This position is responsible for tracking, documenting, and reporting requirements related to the monitoring of subsurface onsite wastewater systems in Chatham County. The position participates in tracking, assisting with sampling as needed, and documenting and reporting requirements related to the wells in Chatham County, as well as participates in the coordination of the food handler education program and all subsequent in-service food handler education programs in Chatham County.

Essential Functions

  • Provide administrative support for all Environmental Health programs including On-Site Wastewater and Food, Lodging, and Institutions;
  • Provide direct support for the Monitoring Program related to billing, scheduling inspections, and updating spreadsheets;
  • Collect water samples for existing or already approved wells, as needed;
  • Conduct Asthma Trigger Assessments for homes upon request of family;
  • Assist Food and Lodging staff with verification visits or education as needed;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associates degree in a science-related or business-related field and one year of experience which demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities to perform administrative office work and field activities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic mathematics;
  • Ability to complete and maintain accurate reports;
  • Comprehensive working knowledge and skill of computers and Microsoft Office programs;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently requires speaking, hearing, reaching, use of hands and fingers, handling or feeling, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, pulling; work has
standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
In the office and the field, unpleasant conditions are encountered while dealing with upset, frustrated property owners, applicants, and business operators. In the field, the EH Tech is exposed to inclement weather conditions and hot and cold ambient air temperatures. While in regulated establishments, the EH Tech is exposed to wet, slippery floors, hazards associated with building construction, and hot, cooking equipment. Periodically the EH Tech may need to lift well house overs that weigh 20 pounds. The specialist is exposed to road conditions while driving from one property to another. Often, two or more of these situations may occur simultaneously.
