Job Description
Job Title: Maintenance Technician (III)
Department: Maintenance
Exemption: Non-exempt
Grade Levels: 5
Level of Authority: Reports to Maintenance Manager
Summary Technician I: Performs general maintenance and repair duties requiring multi-trade work
experience including basic knowledge of carpentry, masonry, welding, electrical, HVAC, painting, and
plumbing for building systems and animal exhibits within The Living Desert (TLD) park facility. Operates
medium to heavy equipment and manlifts. Performs some material receiving tasks, mechanical repairs,
custom fabrication, small project management, vehicle maintenance, and general labor work. Assignments
based on experience and skillsets.
Summary Technician II: Performs Technician I duties. Assists Maintenance Supervisor with small project
management, including developing material lists, cost estimating, and ordering materials after funding
approval. Experience level includes good understanding of principles, controls, and troubleshooting for
HVAC, electrical power distribution, lighting, fire systems, and emergency generators. Performs daily rounds
and responds to radio maintenance support requests. Provides cost-effective and creative solutions for
installation or repair challenges. Understands maintenance management ownership and assists.

Equipment Used: Computer, gas powered vehicles including heavy equipment, electric carts, miscellaneous electric power tools, gas powered and hand tools, electric power and temperature sensing test equipment.

Specific Skills:
? Broad knowledge of maintenance, construction, welding fabrication, Preventative Maintenance, or HVAC,
trade terminology, best practices, tools, materials and equipment.
? Must be flexible and motivated to learn new skills.
? Must have strong organizational skills.
? Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
? Must be a motivated self-starter requiring minimal supervision.
? Must have the ability to constructively work with others in a team setting.
Conditions of Work:
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Occasional standing, walking, bending, twisting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching
motions. Some lifting up to 50 lbs.
DISCOMFORT/RISKS: Occasional exposure to extreme heat, chemicals, and dust/airborne materials. Works
with heavy equipment.
HOLIDAY WORK: Holiday, evening and weekend work may be required.
TRAVEL: Conference and workshop attendance available. If funding available, some or all expenses paid.
Qualifications: Minimum of two years’ experience in general maintenance work including carpentry,
plumbing, electrical and HVAC. Must hold a valid California driver’s license and be insurable on TLD’s
automobile insurance policy. Must be energetic with good communication skills and capable of working
constructively with others in a team setting.
