POSITION OBJECTIVE:The primary focus of the school counselor is to assist students whose emotional/ social problems interfere with their ability to obtain maximum benefit from the educational program. The counselor may also act as a liaison between parents/ guardians, school, and public or private agencies responsible for student care and services in order to assist parents in taking advantage of services available in the school and community. Serve as a mentor to less experienced counselors; serve on Leona-wide crisis response teams to provide support to other schools in the event of major incidents of crisis.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include The Following.
  • Implement a school counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National model in the areas of academic, college and career, and social-emotional development.
  • Conduct counseling evaluations with students suspected of having emotional/behavior problems.
  • Develop treatment plans to guide students toward reaching goals and monitoring progress, and making treatment adjustments when necessary. Refer students to outside resources as needed.
  • Counsel students individually and in small groups. Conduct structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions to meet the identified short-term needs of individuals and groups of students.
  • Maintain appropriate confidential records for students.
  • Review counseling sessions and plan of action with the school leader and district supervisor.
  • Provide feedback and consultation to parents/guardians and staff regarding student counseling activities.
  • Adhere to state and District mandating reporting requirements as they pertain to safety concerns.
  • Provide school counseling core curriculum lessons, parent/family education programs, assist families with school-related problems and issues, and make information available to families.
  • Provide training for staff on Conflict Prevention and Intervention or other strategies, and assist school staff in effectively addressing problem areas.
  • Demonstrate the use of evidence informed practices in their interventions.
  • Attend at least quarterly meetings with the School Safety Assessment and Prevention Team (SSAPT) to review multiple sources of data and discuss/review goals.
  • Consult and collaborate with other school professionals such as school psychologists, school social workers, and school nurses, in addition to community agencies.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the values and ethics of the individuals professional code of ethics.
  • Attend required program training and conduct required program activities, including implementation of social emotional learning strategies.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned.
QualificationsEDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or Psychology required
  • ADE School Counselor Certification required (must apply prior to contract start date)
  • 1-3 years school social work experience or the equivalent, providing the skills and knowledge necessary to plan and implement meaningful and effective guidance and social work activities.
  • Excellent skills in project planning and in coordinating multiple short- and long-term projects.
  • IVP Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
