CHIEF CURATOR

The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), New Orleans’s oldest fine arts institution, seeks an exceptional candidate for the position of Chief Curator. The Chief Curator serves as a strategic member of NOMA’s Executive team. As the lead Curator, the Chief Curator is an advocate for NOMA’s collection and works collaboratively to engage a diverse public with stunning exhibitions and installations. This Chief Curator indirectly reports to the Museum Director and the Museum Deputy Director.

The ideal candidate will be a visionary and shape the future of NOMA’s collections. The Chief Curator needs to be an excellent communicator, an outstanding researcher, and an able administrator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· In collaboration with the Director and Deputy Director, establish overall vision and goals for the Curatorial, Conservation, Registration, and Digital Projects departments, including short, medium, and long-term goals in exhibitions, collections, acquisition, and administration

• Lead highly accomplished curatorial team by establishing priorities, goals and benchmarks for full scope of their curatorial work
• Conceptualize, implement and ensure the successful planning and implementation of exhibitions, installations, as well as the development and stewardship of the collection.
• Supervise conservators and establish priorities for conservation work
• Serve as lead/institutional, curator on exhibition and installation projects that align with area of expertise and/or are assigned by Director
• Manage all aspects of curatorial work pertaining to NOMA’s collection of African diasporic, modern, and contemporary art collection including, but not limited to the research, care, preservation and presentation of the collection, including programmatic activities, including docent training, public and private tours
• Research and publish the collection
• Collaborate and partner with Learning & Engagement in the creation and execution of programmatic activities that relate to collections and exhibitions.
• Cultivate support for the department through the pursuit of gifts of objects, funding, and the establishment of endowments. donors and seek out new acquisitions.
• Work with the docents, membership, collectors and artists.
• Ensure museum standards are followed by volunteers, interns and researchers

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Master’s degree, or equivalent, in Art History or related field

• Ten years’ or more of progressive responsibility within museum leadership
