Category: Recreation / Music PierDepartment: Community ServicesLocation: Aquatic & Fitness CenterDays of Operation: Sunday To SaturdayHours of Operation: 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM M-F, 9:00AM to 6PM Sat, 12:00PM to 6PM SunSeason Length: NAShift and Days Assigned May RotateApprox. # Hrs/Wk: 5DefinitionUnder supervision of the Recreation Supervisor Swimming, instructs individuals and groups on water safety techniques necessary for safe swimming and other water recreational activities.Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesWorks with groups and individuals, instructing them in the skills necessary for safe aquatics recreation; maintains records of group and individual swimming progress; offers and renders advice and assistance whenever requested; instructs groups and individuals in swimming techniques, evaluating abilities of students to determine instruction procedures; conducts and supervises swimming meets and maintains meet records; maintains order and discipline at pool; observes that safety is maintained; rescues swimmers when necessary; applies resuscitation techniques; administers first aid; makes bromine and pH tests, reports findings to pool operators, and records results.RequirementsLicense: Possession of a current and valid water safety instruction certificate issued by the American Red Cross AND Lifeguard certificate issued by the Red Cross. Possession of current and valid First Aid and CPR certificates.Knowledge of: Water rescue methods and principles, practices, and techniques of instructing groups and individuals in proper water safety techniques; modern first aid procedures and techniques; the proper methods and procedures for handling life saving and first aid equipment and apparatus.Ability to: Render first aid to distressed persons; establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public; exercise tact and judgment in maintaining order and discipline and in enforcing pool regulations; swim with ability and skill; remain calm and take decisive action in difficult situations; note and report hazardous conditions; give instructions in the proper techniques of water safety and swimming to individuals and groups of varying ability; learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units; read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.Tools And Equipment UsedFloatation devices, swimming aids such as kick boards and pool buoys, pool vacuum.Physical DemandsPosition requires employee to: Continuously sit; frequently talk or hear; and occasionally swim and rescue stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, reach with hands and arms, and smell, and lift up to 50 lbs. Special vision requirements: Close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employee must be able to perform swimming and rescue skills.Work EnvironmentPosition requires employee to: Continuously work in wet, humid conditions; and occasionally work with chlorine.The work physical demands and work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
