Job Description

Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic environmental and statistical consulting firm with offices across the United States and Canada, is looking for a temporary, full time, Biological Field Technician.

Key Details:

  • Compensation: $17.00-$21.00/hour, DOE
  • Housing: $800 housing stipend
  • Start Date: April 1, 2024
  • End Date: November 15, 2024
  • Location: Oakland, Maryland
  • Additional Details: A rental vehicle can be provided. If a personal vehicle is used, mileage will be reimbursed at the federal rate. GPS unit, compass, camera, tablet and range finder will be provided by WEST. However, technician must be equipped with and provide own suitable safety toed boots (rugged hiking boots, etc.), and appropriate clothing.

 Job Summary:

The successful candidate for this position will be:

  • Able to work independently with the ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with WEST supervisors, clients, and landowners.
  • Experienced in identifying birds and bats of the eastern United States or have experience using guides and keys to identify bird and bat species.
  • Experienced with the use of GPS units, topographic maps, compasses, and other field equipment.
  • Abel to accurately record and review collected data.
  • Comfortable with hazards typical of field work (e.g., mud, dust, driving on gravel roads, extreme heat and cold, biting insects).
  • Able to follow WEST and wind facility safety protocols.
  • Able to work 30-40 hours per week, with variable hours worked per day and occasional weekend and holiday work.

 Responsibilities include: 

  • Post-construction monitoring surveys for birds and bats.
  • Participation in Carcass persistence and Searcher Efficiency Trials
  • Field and in-hand (via specimen) identification, aging, and sexing of bird and bat species.
  • Monitoring bat acoustic equipment and compiling and shipping bat acoustic data collected at wind turbines.

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred, but job experience may substitute. Undergraduates and enthusiastic workers with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Precise and thorough data collection is essential.
  • Must be able to use compass, global positioning system devices, binoculars, range finders, tablets, and digital cameras; as well as maintain equipment.
  • Able to work independently or as part of a team, and interact positively with project manager, field supervisor, landowners, and other technicians.
  • Follow instructions from manager and team leader.

Physical Requirements:

  • Applicants must be in good physical condition, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme. Must be tolerant of biting or stinging insects.
  • Ability to walk long distances (10 miles) in extreme heat.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license will be required. Candidates must adhere to all health and safety requirements.
