Job Summary

The Trainers report to the Lead Trainer who is responsible for helping the Training group proactively ensure the training programs are consistent with safe, environmentally friendly, and optimum refinery operations. The Lead Trainer will be independent, highly motivated and safety oriented.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Supervisory

• Develop individual and team goals on a yearly basis with regular goal reviews to assess progress of direct reports
• Develop and mentor Trainers providing training and developmental opportunities

Safety:

• Ensure that units are operated safely and employees comply with all safety procedures and standards.
• Help Unit Supervisors ensure all operators receive the necessary training to successfully fulfill their duties.
• Ensure all incidents and near misses are reported
• Participate in yearly certification of SOPs
• Participate in incident investigations
• Help all operators review and sign off on MOCs
• Lead and / or participate in assigned incident investigations
• Ensure Operators review and sign off all MOC training before operating any area that has changed.
• Support completion of recommendations from the PSM Audit, Alky QRA, siting study, and API-751 Audit, etc

Training

• Assist Trainers with training new employees and existing employees moving into new job classifications. Assist as required with both written and verbal/walkthrough knowledge assessments
• Help evaluate operator performance. Reward success and correct deficiencies
• Ensure that all operators are up to date on their 3 year recertification
• Develop, coordinate and evaluate applicable Red Tag drills
• Track and develop KPIs relevant to Training
• Audit operator daily tasks including EH&S permits.
• Help Trainers Develop new SOPs
• Ensure unit training modules are kept up to date and relevant
• Ensure online resources / Sharepoint is accurate and up to date
• Conduct monthly safety meetings

Unit Operations

• Ensure safe and efficient work during TAR and other shutdowns/startups. Work in a supervisory function during these events
• Be proficient in unit start-ups, shut-downs and normal operations
• Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues
• Attend morning and afternoon daily operations meetings.
• Backfill for Unit Supervisor as necessary

Education and Experience Requirements

• High School graduate
• 10 years of experience in oil refinery operations.
• Previous console operator qualifications preferred.
• Previous step-up or supervisory experience a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
• Must have a thorough understanding of the operation of refinery process units. Including, but not limited to, distillation towers, reactors, heaters, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors and piping systems.
• Must be familiar with Excel, Word and email programs.
