Position Summary

The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for the effective direction, management and operation of the infection prevention program, including the education of facility staff members and consulting with the county and state department of health. The IP utilizes evidence-based practices such as those published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, the IP ensures compliance with regulations and requirements from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), The Joint Commission (TJC), and other accrediting health care organizations and state regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and implement the infection prevention program goals, objectives, policies and procedures
  • Conduct ongoing review of hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines
  • Provide information to facility committees and department Directors
  • Interact with medical and nursing staff and other departments to provide resource information and resolve infection prevention and control issues on a 24 hr. basis
  • Work with department managers to apply effective policies and procedures for the department and facility that ensure compliance with the TJC, OSHA, CDC, CMS and other local, county, state and federal regulatory accrediting agencies
  • Develop reports and statistical data for infection prevention committee , medical staff committees ,medical executive committee and others as needed
  • Identify staff members’ infection prevention education needs and implement training
  • Participate in the white glove surveys and safety inspections
  • Liaise with Occupational Health regarding staff members health issues and body fluid exposures

Requirements

  • RN or ASCP licensure required
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred in an applied clinical science (Nursing, Medical Technology, Microbiology, Public Health)
  • Certification in Infection Control by the Certification board of Infection Control required within two years of beginning in the role
  • Five years of relevant clinical experience for non-nurse applicants; Registered Nurses should have a broad level of experience including critical care, emergency medicine, and medical/surgical nursing
  • Work independently, set priorities, and organize work
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) should be achieved within two years in the position
  • Knowledgeable in The Joint Commission Standards
  • Must have excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, including hardware and software applications.
