TITLEGuidance Counselor
POSITION TYPEExempt
Primary FunctionAssume responsibility for delivery of guidance counseling services in the school setting
Minimum Qualifications
  • Professional license with endorsement in guidance at the appropriate level (elementary, middle, or high school)
  • Holds a Master’s Degree
  • Possess high moral standards and integrity and demonstrates a willingness to work with all students
  • Ability to quickly learn procedures used to report information and maintain records
  • Ability to prepare required written reports
REPORTS TOBuilding Principal
Performance Responsibilities
  • Support students to understand and deal with developmental issues
  • Instruct students in strategies for making decisions and choices
  • Help students to identify and develop their special talents
  • Assists students with course selection and career pathway
  • Work with students on an individual or group basis to resolve student-indentified areas of concern with emotional wellbeing
  • Consult with teachers on issues related to student learning
  • Interpret the school’s mission to students, parents, and other community members
  • Maintain student records, as assigned
  • Protect student confidentiality
  • Handle issues which are highly sensitive and/or related to student safety according to School Board Policy
  • Interpret educational information (ability and aptitude measures, standardized test scores, and other pertinent data) to students, parents, and other school division personnel
  • Assist with school accountability review
  • Provide crisis counseling to students in need
  • Confer with parents about their own child(ren) or about developmental issues
  • Provide professional development activities as requested (Anti-bullying, etc)
  • Make appropriate referrals to other school division personnel or community agencies
  • Inform parents and/or appropriate authorities when a student’s condition indicates a clear and imminent danger to him/herself or others
  • Take primary responsibility for guidance including careers, post-secondary education and special programs (High School)
  • (High School) Counselor assists, evaluates, and monitors students’ pathway to graduation
  • Develop, review, and maintain individual student educational plans (Middle School and High School)
  • Disseminates information to students in relation to ACT, college and career choices
  • Coordinate the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications (High School)
  • Recommend students to colleges and for scholarships (High School)
  • Coordinate course scheduling (High School)
  • Performs other duties as assigned by school principal
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENTDays and salary set according to School Board Pay Plan.
EVALUATIONPerformance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
