Duties
Performs a wide variety and range of gardening work using independent judgment within the framework of good gardening practices. Prepares soil beds, turf, ballfields, flower gardens, hedges, walkways, garden fixtures and other planting areas considering the individual needs and characteristics of plants, shrubs, ornamental and fruit trees. Performs soil tests to determine deficiencies and corrects these deficiencies through application of the appropriate soil amendments.
Works from project plans, master landscape, and long-range plans, making independent judgments within the framework of good gardening practices. Duties may involve assignments related to irreplaceable historic landscapes designated as protected. Steps to preserve these historic resources involve 1) identifying historic landscapes, their features and potential threats; 2) assessing and recommending landscape preservation maintenance projects; 3) providing technical assistance in the field of historic landscape management and horticulture; and 4) specifying work to be implemented on cultural landscapes.
Plants and/or transplants a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, plants and trees. Performs soil tests todetermine deficiencies and corrects these deficiencies through application of the appropriate soilamendments. Selects or recommends plants for particular purposes, such as shade, boundary lines,ground cover, erosion control, or pleasing appearance. Slopes and plants terraces and sods steepbanks or heavy traffic patterns that involve difficult holding and growth problems.
Prunes shrubs and trees to reduce risk of failure, provide clearance, reduce shade and wind resistance,maintain health, influence flower or fruit production, improve a view, and to improve aesthetics. Calculates appropriate amount of seed per square feet/acre to include mineral and fertilizer requirements along with proper irrigation practices for germination. Performs maintenance and limited repairs of watering/irrigation equipment.
Performs condition assessments of cultural landscape features. Identified and diagnosis insect disease and cultural pressures. Recommends and/or applies proper chemical compounds for control measures (i.e., use of pesticide or herbicide applications). Measures may include biological controls. Selects appropriate spray equipment, nozzles, valves, and hoses and adjusts and calibrates nozzle settings for applications. Records corrective procedures used, including any new processes applied and the results achieved.
Trims shrubs, ornamental and fruit trees and hedges. Mows and edges lawns to maintain appearance. Determines proper mowing heights. Removes rocks, leaves, limbs, and trash from grounds and garden areas. Sweeps and rakes walks and parking areas. Determines causes of erosion and corrective action required to alleviate unsatisfactory conditions.

Education
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, and stooping, and climbs ladders to trim and/or prune trees. At this grade level, the gardener more frequently climbs ladders and stretches to prune or trim vegetation than at lower grade levels. The also frequently lift heavy objects such as bags of fertilizer, grass seed, etc.
Working Conditions: Work is done outside or in a greenhouse. In working outside, the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun, and sometimes to chilly or rainy weather. In some instances the conditions will involve working in air contaminated with chemical dust and sprays being used on trees and shrubs. Grade 08 gardeners are usually exposed to chemical sprays and dusts more frequently than at the lower grade levels.
Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, submission of ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. The statement must specify the dates for each employment period and your level of performance (dates should match the dates on the SF-50s).
