Job Summary and Qualifications

The Phlebotomy Supervisor oversees the technical and administrative aspects of the Phlebotomy section. When necessary, performs venipuncture procedures to obtain blood specimens. The Phlebotomy Supervisor is expected to be highly competent at handling the tasks in the Processing/Specimen Accessioning area and at drawing blood from babies, children, adolescents, adults and elderly patients as needed.

The Supervisor will:

• Demonstrate knowledge of physiology and function of the venous system of the human body, and collection techniques used to draw blood from patients.
• Oversee and be engaged in all aspects of the Phlebotomy section, to include accuracy and timeliness of specimen collections and specimen accessioning (Processing).
• Ensure staffing is adequate and all collections have been performed in a timely manner through management of daily workflow and development plus maintenance of staff work schedule released at least one month in advance.
• Maintains mastery over all collection procedures; assists with maintaining current and compliant collection department procedure manual. Has ability to effectively implement new procedures and processes in the Phlebotomy section.
• Oversees and participates in new employee orientation and training and maintains documentation of training. Oversees training of phlebotomy students from local phlebotomy schools.
• Demonstrate knowledge of human growth and development appropriate to the ages of patients served:
• Neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric
• Demonstrate understanding of testing department processes and specimen requirements and how the quality of testing department results is dependent on adherence to proper specimen collection procedures.
• Practice proper patient identification; label blood vials according to established procedures including use of automated patient identification systems.

Qualifications and Education:

• Education: High School or GED required; formal phlebotomy training preferred.
• Licensure/Certification: Prefer certification by recognized national accrediting agency.
• Experience: At least 4 year’s experience in a hospital required. Interpersonal skills to successfully interact with all co-workers, staff, patients, patient families and vendors
