Town of Nags Head is Hiring an Equipment Operator Near Nags Head, NC

The Town of Nags Head is looking for a motivated team player to join the Public Services Sanitation Team. The Equipment Operator is a highly impactful position that makes a difference in our community. We are looking for an individual that takes pride in their work and wants to contribute in a team atmosphere. This position performs equipment operation in the collection and disposal of yard waste, refuse and debris in the Sanitation Division of the Public Services Department. The work involves the operation of heavy packer trucks with side loading arm to empty can or other related equipment. This requires skill in the operation of heavy equipment in tight spaces, in the dark, and/or on crowded streets. The Town of Nags Head prioritizes safety, and the work is performed in accordance with established safety rules and regulations. 
  • Proficiently operates a side arm hydraulic loader packer or related sanitation equipment in the collection and disposal of garbage, trash, and/or refuse from residential areas of the Town; transports waste to landfill; operates heavy equipment in early/dark hours around overhead limbs, parked cars and utility lines.

  • Operates overhead dumpster packer trucks to empty commercial dumpsters around overhead utility lines, in narrow alley ways, around tree limbs and parked cars or traffic. 

  • Operates knuckle boom crane to load heavy appliances, furniture, or yard waste onto dump truck for removal from curbsides. 

  • Operates roll off cans to transfer them to other various sites; secures containers for travel. 

  • Operates front end loader to load mulch into dump trucks. 

  • Rolls cans back into place; collects any trash that falls from cans; retrieves cans if not at curbside. 

  • Delivers residential cans. 

  • Performs minor maintenance and related care of motorized equipment; cleans and deodorizes trucks; reports maintenance and repair needs to supervisor. 

  • Performs pre and post trip checks. 

  • Makes records of times, stops, and unusual situations on route. 

  • Drives a dump or flatbed truck to collect curbside yard waste, trash, furniture and appliances. 

  • Delivers dumpsters to commercial sites. 

  • Makes records of mileage, times of collection, collection sites, weights for roll off containers both pre and post trip and other records of work activities. 

  • May fill in for coworkers or other divisions. 
  • Performs related duties as required. 

Knowledges Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the street system of the Town.

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy motorized sanitation equipment in the dark around overhead limbs and utility lines and parked cars and traffic. 

  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards of the work and related safety precautions. 

  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations regarding the operation of motorized equipment. 

  • Knowledge of town policies and regulations regarding the collection and disposal of various solid waste materials. 

  • Skill in the operation of a wide variety of large trucks and heavy equipment in tight locations around traffic and overhead utility lines. 

  • Ability to identify maintenance and repair needs of equipment. 

  • Ability to prepare and maintain records of work activities. 

  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. 

  • Ability to work in all types of weather.

Desirable Education and Experience

  • Graduation from high school and considerable experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment and vehicles, preferably in the collection of solid waste materials; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Special Requirement

  • Possess of valid North Carolina grade B Commercial Driver's License.
