School Nurse 

Terms of Employment
Full-time, 187 days (Depending on start date). Salary is based on education and experience and will be prorated per our Certified Salary Schedule not to exceed letter I ($45,000 to $76,601). The District provides its employees with a comprehensive benefits program including medical, life, and dental insurance. The District provides three medical plans for which it pays the full premium for employees, and a fourth option is a buy-up plan for which the district pays the majority of the premium. In addition, the District pays the full employee premium for dental insurance and life insurance. The District contributes to PERA on each employee's behalf and offers additional retirement savings options as well as optional supplemental insurance. Employees also receive paid time off. Worker’s compensation and unemployment insurance are provided in accordance with State law.

Position Purpose 
Under the general supervision and direction of the Special Education Director, in collaboration with the Building Principals, the individual will be responsible for delivering health care services in schools, providing other services to allow students to remain in school, and work with special education teams as a part of the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) team as needed.

Essential Functions 
  • Responsible for ordering supplies and maintaining school health offices, training health room and office staff, and delegating duties as needed according to State of Colorado Nursing guidelines.
  • Conducts programs of immunizations and mandated screening examinations according to State of Colorado regulations.
  • Identifies students with medical concerns and prepares care plans as appropriate.
  • Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
  • Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on student health matters, respecting the bounds of confidentiality.
  • Obtains medical and social history as needed, visits homes when necessary.
  • Assumes authority in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with State of Colorado guidelines.
  • Prepares reports, assessments, and attends meetings as needed as part of the Special Education Team.
  • Implements Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases, and immunization requirements.
  • Participates in in-service training programs.
  • Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
  • Participates as a crisis team member.
  • May be called upon to provide health or medical related information to the staff and students.
  • Provide screenings to students within the district including but not limited to hearing and vision. 
Additional Duties 
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Special Education Director, or the Superintendent.

Confidential Information
  • Staff members shall not access, receive, transmit or retransmit material regarding students, parents/guardians or district employees that is protected by confidentiality laws.
  • If material is not legally protected but is of a confidential or sensitive nature, great care shall be taken to ensure that only those with a “need to know” are allowed access to the material.
  • Staff members shall handle all employee, student, and district records in accordance with applicable district policies.
  • Staff members who intentionally disclose student records, other confidential student information and/or district information may be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. 
Equipment 
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone. 

Travel Requirements 
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

  • Ability to assist students with personal care services and activities of daily living including but not limited to toileting, feeding, position changes and transfers, and mobility in the school setting.
  • Ability to monitor and collect data related to student health conditions (i.e. seizures) in the school setting.
  • Has skills to perform tasks such as gastrostomy and jejunostomy tube feedings, catheterization and diabetes care.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to lift and safely move 50 lbs. or more. 
  • To be physically capable of lifting, bending and providing physical support for students.

  • Frequent standing, kneeling, crouching, walking and stooping.
  • Vision for close, peripheral, color, depth perception, distance and adjusted focus.
Qualifications Profile
Education/Certification/License
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution* OR three (3) or more years of licensed, practical experience as an RN with school-aged children
  • A valid RN issued by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies or an RN in a state that is participating in the nurse licensing compact agreement
  • Colorado Department of Education Special Service Provider license with a School Nurse endorsement or ability to obtain one
  • Successful completion of field experiences and a supervised practicum as prescribed by the preparing institution, including experiences with school-age children in a community health/public health or school setting
  •  *CCNE- and ACEN-accredited programs are also accepted.
  •  Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Experience 
Prior nursing in a school setting preferred by not required.
