Description of Occupational Work
This class series uses two levels in the Health and Human Services occupational group, Medical Services
occupational series and describes dental care to include but not limited to diagnostic, preventive, restorative,
periodontal, endodontal, orthodontia, oral surgery and prosthetic services by applying the principles, theories
and practices of dental science. Positions in this class series must possess a valid license to practice dentistry
in the State of Delaware.
Essential Functions
Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not
intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are
descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.
Performs dental examinations of teeth and surrounding tissue utilizing x-rays and medical
history records to determine dental treatment needs.
Provides dental services including but not limited to cleaning, scaling, bonding, fillings,
extractions, restorations, oral surgery, pulp therapy for root canal treatment, simple bridgework,
crown work, partial dentures, and installs space maintainers and prepares procedures for
orthodontic appliances.
Prescribes and dispenses medication as required.
Administers local anesthesia, analgesia and sedation.
Supervises, trains and evaluates clinic staff.
Writes statistical and/or evaluative reports.
Provides emergency dental services to members of the community.
Levels of Work
Dentist
This is the full performance level of dentistry work providing comprehensive dental care and managing a
dental clinic.
Reports to a technical superior.
Provides direct dental care and oral surgery.
Plans and organizes daily operations of a clinic to include administering a budget.
Attends conferences for consultative and educational purposes.
Regular contacts are typically with individuals in order to provide treatment, internal staff to
provide supervision/guidance and to confer with specialists on complex cases and to make
referrals.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of dental medicine and surgery in accordance with the
ADA guidelines.
Knowledge of use and care of hand instruments, dental equipment and the appropriate use of
dental materials and medications.
Knowledge of federal, state and local rules and regulations.
Knowledge of current developments in the field of dentistry.
Knowledge of supervising clinic staff and managing a dental clinic.
Skill in performing a full range of dental services.
Skill in diagnostic techniques.
Ability to detect and identify existing conditions and select appropriate corrective action.
Ability to assess and discuss critical and complex cases with specialists.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates,
subordinates, representatives of public agencies and organizations, and private health care
providers.
Ability to train, supervise and evaluate the work of clinic staff.
Ability to complete accurate statistical and evaluative reports.
Ability to gain confidence and educate individuals and their families regarding dental health
hygiene.
In addition to the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, the Dentist Administrator requires:
Knowledge of budget functions.
Knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of complex dental diseases.
Knowledge of clinical teaching methods.
Knowledge of quality assurance and infection control guidelines.
Skill in instructing dental residents in all clinical aspects of an institutional clinic.
