The original Interlake Steamship Company has been in the Marine Transportation business since incorporating in 1913, carrying bulk cargoes for customers located throughout the Great Lakes region. As the largest, privately held U.S Flag fleet on the Lakes, Interlake's wholly owned subsidiary, Interlake Steamship Company (ISC), owns and operates a modernized fleet of ten self-unloading vessels. ISC transports more than 20 million tons of raw materials annually, including iron ore, coal, stone and salt.
In addition to ISC, Interlake's operating lines include the following:
  • Interlake Logistics Solutions, Inc, which operates a tug/barge unit on the Great Lakes that carries specialty cargoes and scrap metal

Job SummaryWe are seeking a skilled Maritime IT Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining IT hardware and software onboard maritime vessels, as well as providing technical support to vessel crew members for IT-related issues.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Travel to vessels located on the Great Lakes to install, configure, and maintain IT hardware and software onboard maritime vessels, including computers, servers, networking equipment, and specialized maritime technologies.
  • Perform routine inspections and diagnostics of IT systems to identify and resolve issues proactively.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to vessel crew members for IT-related problems and emergencies.
  • Collaborate with the shore-based team to coordinate remote support, software deployments, and system upgrades for vessels in operation.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of IT maintenance activities, including equipment inventory, repairs, and software configurations.
  • Adhere to maritime regulations and safety protocols while working onboard vessels, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and procedures.
  • Provide technical assistance and support for computer systems, software, and hardware.
  • Respond to incidents and inquiries in person, via email, and over the phone in a timely and professional manner.
  • Guide remote users through the problem-solving process.
  • Provision and deploy laptops, desktops, printers, scanners, and other IT equipment.
  • Install computer peripherals and configure software for users.
  • Solicit and record feedback from end users about computer usage and IT support.
  • Requisition and track inventory for IT systems and software.
  • Identify technical problems with Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), and telecommunication systems.
Knowledge And Skill Requirements
  • Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school or six months to one year of related experience/training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven experience as an IT technician or similar role, preferably in a maritime or marine industry setting.
  • Strong technical skills in hardware, software, networking, and telecommunications systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and the ability to work under pressure in a dynamic environment.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with diverse teams, including vessel crew members and shore-based staff.
  • Strong understanding of hardware, software, and networking fundamentals.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and troubleshooting a variety of IT issues, including hardware failures, software glitches, and network connectivity problems.
  • Familiarity with operating systems (Windows) and common software applications.
  • Knowledge of mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) and their operating systems (iOS, Android).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Database software.
  • Problem-Solving - Be able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully; develop alternative solutions.
  • Professionalism – Approach others in a tactful manner; react well under pressure; treat others with respect and consideration regardless of their status or position; accept responsibility for own actions; follow through on commitments.
  • Quality – Monitor own work to ensure quality.
  • Adaptability – Be able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Industry certifications such as CompTIA A or similar qualifications can demonstrate expertise and credibility.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and have a clear driving record. Must be able to pass security clearance to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker’s Identification Card) through US Government.
Other Requirements
  • Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • While performing the duties of this job, you will be required to regularly sit and occasionally required to stand, walk, climb, and balance. You must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
While performing the duties of this job, you may occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the office work environment is usually quiet, and on the ships, it is moderate. Earplugs must be worn in the ship’s engine room.
