Summary Of PositionUnder general supervision, performs repair and preventive maintenance duties on a wide variety of fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment. Position is responsible for inspecting fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment, diagnosing mechanical problems and making necessary repairs, performing preventative maintenance and repair work, maintaining parts inventory, maintaining maintenance records, and, performs related work as required.
Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Repairs and performs routine and preventative maintenance on fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment, both in shop and on-site: coordinates repair/service activities with appropriate Fire department personnel, Fleet Services personnel, and/or outside service providers; identifies maintenance/repair priorities, taking into consideration factors such as safety and equipment downtime; works to minimize repair and maintenance costs and length of down time; plans and schedules work to ensure equipment is ready for service.
  • Ensures compliance of repair and maintenance work with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures: ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees, vehicle drivers, and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
  • Verifies that proper repairs are completed on fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment performed by outside vendors or repair facilities.
  • Visually and manually inspects fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment to diagnose problems. Inspects, tests, and diagnoses issues involving various systems/components of fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment. Troubleshoots and repairs electrical, mechanical, hydraulic malfunctions, and air conditioning systems.
  • Performs proper repair, removal, replacement, rebuilding, or maintenance work on fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment systems and components.
  • Designs, engineers, and builds a variety of specialized storage and mounting components to obtain effective access, removal and storage of tools and equipment on vehicles/apparatus: installs add-on equipment for newly obtained fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment; welds, fabricates, and/or assembles metal components, parts, brackets, storage systems, and/or equipment for fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Performs routine servicing and preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment, and tools in operable condition, including pumping fuel into vehicles, checking fluid levels and replacing fluids, draining/replacing oil, changing/replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, rotating tires, replacing tires/belts/hoses, checking batteries, greasing equipment, flushing radiators, performing tune-ups, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop, or emptying trash containers; properly disposes of petroleum and other regulated waste materials; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining log/records of inspection, preventive maintenance work, repair activities, warranty records, and other documentation: ensures compliance with recordkeeping requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and other regulatory agencies.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, testing, or driving fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Drives to and from destinations as assigned by supervisor. Responds to emergency breakdowns or makes service calls to off-site locations after hours, weekends and on holidays as needed.
  • Researches repair requirements, preventive maintenance standards, and parts requirements for a variety of fire apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Communicates with supervisor, co-workers, dealers, vendors/service providers, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Maintains an awareness of new parts, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession: reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Available to perform emergency repair work after hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Complies with all written City policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in City and department attendance policies and procedures.
Other Job Functions
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
  • Recommends new/innovative equipment/tools for consideration of maintenance issues.
  • Assists with replacement and disposal of obsolete fire apparatus, vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Performs special projects, other functions, or provides assistance to other employees, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Behaviors
  • Ability to embrace and embody the City's core values of Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence (R.I.S.E.).
  • Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of fire apparatus, vehicles, equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments, on an as-needed basis (for testing purposes).
  • Requires the ability to operate volt ohmmeter, amp meter, pressure gauges, calibrating tools for engines, brakes, micrometers and dial calipers, grinders, saws, drills, torch, precision gauges, inspection and diagnostic equipment, AC pump/gauges
  • Reads and follows simple to complicated instructions, schematics, and other information contained in repair manuals for the diagnosis and repair of fire apparatus, vehicles, equipment. Reads and understands reference books and complicated procedures and manuals.
  • Skills in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions.
  • Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
  • Requires the ability to perform skilled coordinated movements, such as operating a personal computer, tools, motor vehicles, and other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • The ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers and customers with respect, and acts in a manner that is approachable, friendly, and inviting.
  • Builds professional relationships with internal staff, external vendors, sub-contractors, consultants, and customers.
  • Offers flexibility and adaptability, especially during times of change.
Required QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSMust possess a High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by five (5) years of experience in fire apparatus repair and maintenance work, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
Must possess a valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months from date of hire; and,
Must Possess And Maintain The Fire Apparatus Technician Level I, Or The Ability To Obtain Within One (1) Year From The Date Of Hire. This Includes
  • Obtaining the T4 Heavy-Duty Truck, Brakes and T5 Heavy-Duty Truck, Suspension & Steering Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications; and,
  • Obtaining the F1 Maintenance, Inspection & Testing of Fire Apparatus and F2 Design & Performance Standards of Fire Apparatus Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications.
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.Preferred QualificationsVocational and/or technical degree with a training emphasis in automotive or diesel technology preferred.

  • Over two-thirds of on-the-job time is spent standing, reaching and using one's hands to touch, handle or feel objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • This job does require exposure to certain environmental conditions. Tasks may require working near moving mechanical parts over two-thirds of the time.
  • Tasks may require working in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), extreme cold and extreme heat (non-weather), outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and contact with fumes or airborne particles between one to two-thirds of the time.
  • Less than one-third of the time, tasks may involve exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electric shock.
