As a Veterinarian with us, you'll be at the forefront of providing essential medical services for the prevention, treatment, and control of diseases and injuries in animals. Beyond that, you'll be a key player in enforcing laws and regulations related to public health, contributing significantly to the overall welfare of both animals and the community.
DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL
The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control is one of the largest and most progressive animal control agencies in the United States. Our seven animal care centers serve unincorporated Los Angeles County and 45 contract cities with a combined total population of over 3 million residents. We cover more than 3,400 square miles of cities, deserts, beaches, and mountains; from the Antelope Valley in the north to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the south, as far east as the border of San Bernardino County, and west to Thousand Oaks. We provide animal control and rescue services in our service areas 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What you would do:
Investigates, prevents, controls and eradicates infectious diseases of animals including those transmissible to man, with particular emphasis on organized disease control programs such as tuberculosis, brucellosis, and rabies.
Investigates rabies suspects and animal bites of people; imposes quarantines on biting domestic animals; collects samples for rabies testing where wild animals are involved.
Issues quarantines and hold orders in disease outbreaks and supervises the enforcement of these orders.
Collects data and laboratory samples, such as blood, tissue, parasites, when indicated for disease investigations and forwards to appropriate diagnostic laboratory; consults with department, private and other public veterinarians and animal owners on disease problems.
Prepares required records and reports.
Acts as an agent for the Chief Veterinarian in disaster situations such as earthquakes, fires, and floods, for the health and welfare of animals and for disease control.
Operates a spay/neuter clinic to help reduce and control the animal population of the County.
Examines, diagnoses, gives emergency treatment to animal within the animal care center/shelter adjacent to the spay/neuter clinic.
Supervises personnel assigned to the clinic and the care center/shelter staff regarding the care of sick animals.
Advises the public and department employees on matters within the field of veterinary medicine.
Conducts vaccination clinics, provides medical consultations and services during special events such as adoption drives sponsored by outside agencies or the department.

Requirements:

  1. A valid California State License to practice veterinary medicine and
  2. A valid California Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions
Desirable Qualifications:
Experience working in an animal shelter
Physical Class:
3 - Moderate:  Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. 
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This is a noncompetitive examination. This examination is intended to merely qualify applicants. Applicants will be placed on an eligible register without indication of relative standing in the examination.
SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Original license MUST be presented during the selection process and prior to appointment.
LICENSE:A valid California State License to practice veterinary medicine -AND- A valid California Class C Driver License OR the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
The required license MUST be current and unrestricted; conditional, provisional, probationary or restricted license will not be accepted.
What to Expect Next/ Eligibility Information:
a. Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis and promulgated to the eligible register accodingly.
b. There is no score group since this will be Non-Competitive 
c. The appointing power may appoint any one of the names on the appropriate list, except a person without Veteran's credit may not be appointed if there are three or more names on the list of persons entitled to Veteran's credit. d. The names of candidates who qualify will be added to the eligible register for a period of twelve months from the date of promulgation. e. No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve months.
