The Wall Las Memorias is Hiring a Community Organizer Near Los Angeles, CA

Start Date: Immediately
Department(s): Substance Use Prevention Services
Office Location: 800 W. 6th St., Los Angeles, CA 90017 and/or 2020 E. 1st St., Los Angeles, CA 90033
Hours: Full-Time (40 hours a week) M-F 9am-6pm (some nights and weekends will be required)
Salary: $45,000-$48,000 annual (depending on experience and expertise)
Benefits:

  • Employee responsible for dependents.
· Paid vacation (80 Hours first year of employment, after 5 years it increases to 96 hours)

Opportunity: To work for highly acclaimed organization which constructed the nation’s only publicly funded AIDS monument and utilizes a community based organizing model to address social justice issues and providing health education and wellness prevention programs such as substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, and mental health. The Wall Las Memorias is nationally respected for its community engagement and outreach.
Mission: The Wall-Las Memorias Project is a community health and wellness organization dedicated to serving Latino, LGBTQ and other underserved populations through advocacy, education and building the next generation of leadership.
Description: The Wall Las Memorias understands the dangers of alcohol, marijuana- cannabis and other drugs. We believe by working together with community leaders we can better provide education, prevention, and advocacy services to curtail the abuse use of alcohol and drugs.
Objective Goals and Service/Activities (but not limited to):
  • Identify and recruit youth, adults, adults and family members at risk for substance use disorders.
  • This position will work with community influencers to provide education -prevention support for SUD
  • Facilitate and provide support abuse prevention workshops, presentations and provide referrals as possible.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with other agencies and parents for the purpose of raising awareness in the community about TWLMP mission and to build collaborative service networks.
  • Responsible for any other assignments provided by the Programs Manager.
  • Assist in the development of public policy.
  • Assist in development and distribution of a social media campaign.
  • Assist and organize in agency yearly events and develop tailored marketing material.
  • Assists in developing an outreach plan.
  • Conduct targeted outreach at venues, schools, youth groups, events and activities frequently visited by at-risk communities.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate degree or Two (2) years’ experience in social welfare, public health or related field. (Preferred)
  • One (1) year experience providing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) prevention services prior to employment. (Preferred)
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in non-profit setting or prevention work (Preferred)
  • Excellent organizational, verbal, written and public speaking skills.
  • Experience of working with youth, high schools, parents, and school’s administrators
  • Must be knowledgeable of Southeast Los Angeles and the including the cities of Bellflower, Maywood, Huntington Park, South Gate and surrounding cities.
  • Good understanding of the wellness and healthcare needs of underserved communities
  • Ability to work well with diverse populations and stakeholders.
  • Knowledgeable in developing, providing, and/or evaluating community-based environmental prevention programs/services.
  • Knowledgeable in engaging and/or organizing community members, businesses, and community leaders in the implementation/adoption of a community and/or population-based effort.
  • Ability to implement evidence-based strategies and prevention concepts for addressing alcohol related community problems and contributing factors.
  • Competency to work with the various ethnic/cultural groups in the target area/community.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
