The role of the Surgical Technician is to assist during operative and invasive procedures in the surgical center. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitors PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies. Assists with cleaning and sterilizing all surgical instruments. Participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions of the Optician include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
  • Assists in positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Sets up, scrubs and prepares procedures at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by Circulating RN or Team Leader.
  • Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulation RN.
  • Always maintains and orderly and sterile instrument table for the purposes of efficiency; follows department standard set up.
  • Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulation RN and surgeon and/ or corrects immediately.
  • Carries out medical/ surgical asepsis during treatment/ procedures.
  • Follows as aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Maintains safe environment for patient, co-workers and self, per ASC policies and procedures.
  • Checks all equipment/ instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
  • Protects patients sensitivities and right to privacy; closely observes patient with minimal disturbance.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/ health care errors to include proper patient identification and surgical site verification.
  • Anticipates needs of surgeon during intraoperative phase.
  • Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies, when necessary and organizes effectively for end of case clean up.
  • Is fully responsible for care of instruments/ equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments.
  • Follows written procedures for steam sterilization; knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.
  • Consults with team when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedure.
  • Regularly collaborates with other member of the nursing team to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Interacts professionally with patient and family.
  • Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurances, as necessary.
  • Notifies appropriate licensed professional when patient complains of pain.
  • Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of adult patients for treatment.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/ spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Able to interpret data about the patients status to identify patients age specific needs and provide care needed by appropriate age demographic patient group.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationship with coworkers for the patient benefit.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts and good judgment within the operating room technicians scope of practice.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of assigned case and instruments and/ or trays to be pulled for the procedure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)

  • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Current BCLS Certification and must maintain BLS certification.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in EMR and computer literacy.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Additional languages preferred.
  • Create and provide a positive, accountable, and inspired work environment.
  • Well organized and attentive to detail.
