Lenawee County, MI is Hiring a Bailiff Near Lenawee County, MI

To perform responsible law enforcement and court work; to maintain order in the court room; to protect the judges and jurors and provide assistance as required; to perform necessary recordkeeping work; and to perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Sheriff or designee

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLIITIES: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform).

  • Maintain order in the court room and enforce court rules, regulations and directives.
  • Assist witnesses to be sworn in and seated
  • Assist jurors before, during and after deliberation
  • Protect judge, jurors and other persons in the court
  • Guard prisoners from jail and/or holding them in a cell for arraignment in court
  • Take prisoners to jail when committed by the court
  • May take defendants and files to the clerk's office, making sure fines, costs and bonds are paid an necessary paperwork is completed
  • Perform related work as required

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and/or QUALIFICATIONS: An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following training, qualifications, and/or experience.

  • Graduation from an accredited high school
  • Reasonable work experience, which would indicate dependability, maturity, and the ability to exercise good judgement, and preferable, some recent experience in police work.
  • Reasonable knowledge of court regulations and procedures
  • Reasonable knowledge of pertinent state and local laws and ordinances
  • Ability to prepare accurate written records and reports
  • Ability to act quickly and with good judgement in emergencies
  • Skill in the use of firearms
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees and the general public

 WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Work is primarily indoors and requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
  • Must be able to hear and speak over the phone and in one-on-one communication needs
  • Must be able to see and notice the needs of others.
