We own and operate premier senior living communities that provide a spectrum of housing and care options including independent living, assisted living, memory support services, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and community-based home care. Our charitable programs include a domestic violence prevention center and shelter, and we provide scholarships and educational support for students attending an all-girls Catholic high school in the Chicago area.

Position Summary

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Franciscan Ministries is responsible for overseeing the strategic and operational aspects of the information technology (IT) department. This executive role is crucial in ensuring that IT initiatives align with the organization’s mission and values, enhancing the quality of care and life for our residents. The CIO will lead the development and implementation of innovative technology solutions that improve operational efficiency, enhance security, and support the delivery of exceptional senior care services.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  •  Develop and execute a comprehensive IT strategy that supports the organization’s goals.
  • Lead the IT department’s strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing IT initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IT systems.

Team Management:

  • Oversee the recruitment, development, retention, and organization of all IT staff in accordance with the budgetary objectives and personnel policies of the organization.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.

Technology Oversight:

  • Ensure continuous delivery of IT services through oversight of service level agreements with end users and monitoring of IT systems performance.
  • Provide direction for IT solutions that enhance mission-critical business operations.

Risk Management:

  • Manage IT security and risk by establishing appropriate standards and controls, managing security technologies, and directing the establishment and implementation of policies and procedures.

Budget Management:

  • Responsible for the annual IT budget and its implementation, ensuring cost-effectiveness and justification of expenditures.

  • Takes ownership of job responsibilities by initiating prompt and appropriate action/follow-up in all areas. Ensures appropriate and timely resolutions to situations.
  • Exhibits resourcefulness and Initiative in anticipating and meeting the needs of residents, co-workers, and subordinates in a pro-active manner. Encourages and empowers subordinates to perform in the same manner.
  • Welcomes feedback, suggestions, and new ideas as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve services.
  • Promotes and supports the change effort through accurate and timely communication, flexibility, and acceptance.
  • Aligns community/departmental goals and objectives with the overall strategic plan of the organization.

Position Requirements

  • Education - A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience - At least 10 years of leadership experience in an IT environment, with a strong preference for experience in healthcare or senior living industries.

Skills and Competencies 

  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of IT systems and infrastructure.
  • High competency in strategic planning and business development.
  • Deep understanding of data management and IT security.
  • Ability to align IT with organizational mission and values.
  • Travel - Ability to travel frequently between different community locations

Essential Functions 

The Chief Information Officer is in contact with community leaders and associates daily. The incumbent should have a friendly demeanor and a willing to help attitude partnered with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

External and internal applicants, as well as position incumbents who become disabled must be able to perform the essential job specific functions either unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation to be determined by the organization on a case by case basis.

Abide by the ministry and community’s general policies and procedures including the mission statement.

General Working Conditions

Occasional exposure to:

  • General office areas as well as throughout the community.
  • Moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions by associates, vendors, residents, family members, and visitors.
  • Is involved with associates, residents, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Maintains confidential information due to its sensitive nature and in accordance with HIPAA policies.

Physical Demands of the Position

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the day.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and stoop.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this community, which include a medical and physical examination.

Mental Acuity Requirements of the Job

  • Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with the residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies / personnel, and the general public.
  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents

Technical/Motor Skill Requirements of the Job

  • Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to communicate with people of all professional and social levels.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and other common software applications.
  • Must be familiar with the internet and able to research topics as needed.
  • Must possess the ability to use general office equipment.
  • Computers, printer, computer software, office equipment, such as copiers, facsimiles, and calculators.
