Lake County Government is Hiring a Deputy sheriff Near Leadville, CO

Hiring Range : $60,900-$73,270 Based of years of experience. Additional pay potential for higher education and level of Spanish proficiency.

Position Summary The Patrol Deputy serves in a highly responsible and visible capacity in the protection of life and property, preserves the public peace, prevents crimes, arrests violators of the law, enforces all laws and ordinances and performs other related work as required or assigned.

Deputies are expected to use the minimum force necessary to carry out their duties and are required to handle a variety of potentially volatile and dangerous situations in a calm, confident and effective manner.

Overtime opportunities after 80 hours of work in a 14 day period. General Duties & Responsibilities Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Essential Functions - Perform daily duties, such as viewing reports, corresponding with the Lake County District Attorney’s Office, and ensuring paperwork is complete.

  • Obtain search and arrest warrants. - Follow the Lake County Sheriff’s Office policy and procedure guidelines as well as the Lake County Employee Handbook.
  • Able to respond to any situation and provide sound judgement. - Assist in all situations and be able to take Incident Command on any and all situations that require a tactical response.

Must be able to assess the situation and decide on a response or tactical plan. - Able to assess crime scenes and take control of calls for service.

  • Handle complaints from citizens. - Perform a range of duties, ranging from sitting for long periods of time in a patrol vehicle to standing or walking for long periods of time.
  • Able to work in adverse weather conditions, including rain, sleet, hail, and snow and under extreme time constraints. - Maintain strong time management skills in order to complete reports, community engagement opportunities, general patrol activities, meetings, and trainings.
  • Able to work alone and with minimal guidance or supervision. Be self-motivated and display a good sense of self-initiative.
  • Make field decisions in critical incidents. - Responsible for the daily enforcement of Colorado Statutes and Lake County Ordinances.
  • Maintain a proactive approach to enforcement and adhere to Patrol Deputy duties. - Ensure reports are complete, accurate, and prepared for distribution to the Court, Clerks, and District Attorney.

Supervisory Responsibilities Not Applicable Notice of Emergency / Disaster Responsibilities All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners.

To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management training and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management.

With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Criminal Studies preferred. - Possession and maintenance of a valid Colorado driver’s license, clean criminal record, and clean driver’s record.
  • Ability to pass all required examinations within the testing process, including a physical ability exam, Psychological exam, Polygraph exam, background exam, written and oral exams, and final Sheriff’s interview.
  • Ability to possess a firearm and pass the Colorado POST firearms qualification. - Ability to pass arrest control & defense program.
  • Ability to pass TASER qualification. - Ability to see with or without corrective lenses (well enough to read letters and reports).
  • Ability to hear with or without hearing aids and speak well enough to converse on phone or radio. - Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, twist, reach, and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to write, type, and perform other office duties. - Read and write the English language with conciseness and understandable vocabulary.
  • Preferred bilingual in English and Spanish. Hazard Notice Employee may be exposed to and be required to work with escalated individuals.

Physical Activity & Work Environment - Ability to work indoors in an office environment with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer.

  • Ability to hear with or without hearing aids, and to speak well enough to converse on the phone or two-way radio. - Ability to see with or without corrective lenses well enough to read letter and reports.
  • Shall have the ability to hear with or without hearing aids, and to speak well enough to converse on the phone or two-way radio.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, twist, reach and lift up to 40lbs. - Ability dexterity to write, type and perform other office duties.
  • Attend training and seminars as necessary and / or as directed by Sheriff / Undersheriff to maintain a proficient knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
