Nelson County Public Schools is Hiring a Behavior Specialist Near Lovingston, VA

Primary PurposeThe Behavior Specialist will work with K-12 school personnel to develop and lead the delivery of behavior analytic assessment and treatment services throughout the division. The Specialist will design positive support plans for students with challenging or interfering behavior and provide support and professional learning to school staff and administrators in appropriate intervention techniques.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Respond to school needs for individual student behavior interventions/de-escalation;
  • Complete functional analysis, functional behavior assessment, and skill assessments;
  • Develop behavior plans and specific intervention plans for students and assist in their implementation, including using appropriate resources and technology to promote development of critical thinking, problem solving, and pro-social behavior in students, working with students in classrooms to reach goals as determined by their educational plan, and conducting ongoing follow-up assessment/evaluation/observation of progress on the behavior plans;
  • Assist teachers in the identification and development of individualized behavior interventions intended to change behaviors; using evidence based strategies;
  • Collect data regarding student behaviors and recommend appropriate instructional modifications to develop responsible thinking and decision-making skills in students;
  • Identify and implement appropriate interventions for students in need of additional assistance, ensuring all treatment interventions are consistent with Trauma-Informed Systems of Care;
  • Develop the skills and self-esteem necessary for identified students to exercise meaningful options in areas of school, leisure, and inter/intra personal relationships;
  • Present professional development for administrators and teachers on behavior intervention, substance abuse, anger management, as well as other topics and support the staff in the implementation of their new learning;
  • Serve as a member and work collaboratively with any and all school or community teams responsible for monitoring behavioral services;
  • Assist families and school staff in accessing community resources;
  • Provide reports and data as required;
  • Provide support and informational workshops to parents and staff;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Professional Development – Be involved in professional enrichment to the extent necessary to keep abreast of development in child development and behavior and in the field of general education.
  • Transportation of Equipment – Lift, move, carry and otherwise transport equipment and materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Professional and Confidential – Be professional in dealing with school matters. All matters are to be kept confidential. Reports are made to the appropriate person or group.
  • Working with Groups – Service with colleague and administrative groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
  • Record-keeping – Perform such record-keeping functions as are necessary and appropriate.
  • Public Relations - Demonstrate a positive relationship and good overall customer service with all stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in education, counseling, social work, psychology, sociology or a related field preferred
  • Valid Virginia Professional Teaching License preferred
  • At least three years of experience in K-12 public education required
  • Licensure in behavior analysis preferred

  • Demonstrate the leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community partners.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of student behaviors and K-12 public education instruction with various audiences and group dynamics.
  • Excel in use of computer/technology and applicable software
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with staff and the public
  • Ability to operate computers/technology to manage records and other writing materials
  • Ability to orally communicate effectively with others, with or without the use of an interpreter
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services
  • Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences and/or professional literature
  • Ability to work with and cooperate with staff at all levels
  • Ability to observe and follow all school division policies at all times
  • Ability to keep student and personnel information and records confidential
  • Possess high moral standards and integrity
  • Demonstrate professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community
Working Conditions And RequirementsThe duties of this position are complex and diverse. Successful candidates must have the ability to multitask, deal with change, and show initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with minimal supervision. Must have the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time in an office environment, see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without visual aids, hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone, speak clearly and in audible tones in person and on the telephone, follow oral and written instructions, and be physically agile to lift up to 25 pounds.
