Nebraska Wesleyan University invites applications for a Scene Shop Supervisor for the Theatre Arts program. The start date for this position would be August 2024.

The incumbent in this position will work 40 hours per week over 10 months of each academic year. Primary goals for this position include management of our on-site scene shop (which has a ShopBot CNC router), using master carpentry skills, completion of scenic painting, and managing student workers on department productions.

The successful candidate for this position will possess a high level of technical theatre expertise, initiative, self-motivation, commitments to safety and diversity, and be able to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and guest directors.

Knowledge of welding, theatre lighting and sound technology is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the Department Chair, Manager of Theatre Operations, Production Coordinator and Technical Director, Costume Shop Supervisor, designers, and faculty for all campus theatre productions.
• Facilitate set construction, set painting, props construction, and resource management for theatre program, including maintaining inventory and ordering supplies and new equipment in the scene shop.
• Monitor the condition of equipment, arrange for repair and replacement within budgetary constraints, and perform preventative maintenance of equipment.
• Attend scheduled production meetings, as needed, to plan construction and scene shop aspects of theatre productions.
• Responsible for teaching and enforcing proper safety use and operation techniques when using tools and equipment in the scene shop or stage spaces.
• Supervise scene shop work study students and students doing practicum hours for classes.
• Ability to work independently to complete scenic builds in times when there may be no shop workers.
• Must be able to work a variety of hours including possible nights and weekends during tech week prior to each production.

Qualifications

• Must have excellent carpentry skills.
• Must have a valid driver's license to pick up equipment and supplies.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs to fill demands of the job.
• Ability to prepare, read and interpret technical drawings of ground plans, section views, front elevations, light plots, etc.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work, set and meet deadlines, help devise a season schedule for shop and stage work, and work well under deadline pressures.
• Must have excellent communication and human relations skills, and the ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and diverse populations.
• Degree in theatre and supervisory experience preferred.
