Title: Custodian
Location: Yelm and Kaila Celeste-Lacey Branches
Category: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Reports To: Director of Facilities and Nutrition
Pay Rate: $18.00/hr – $20.00/hr (relevant experience, may result in pay increase)
Schedule: 30 hours per week, 5:00 pm - 11:30 pm, Mondays-Fridays

JOB SUMMARY

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment for members, staff, and visitors at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Thurston County. This role ensures the Clubs are presentable and in good repair, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere that supports the Club's mission of inspiring and enabling youth to realize their greatness.

We are looking for a self-motivated and positive individual who can balance an energetic, fun, youth-focused atmosphere with professionalism and maturity.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment.
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to cleanliness and safety.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to interact positively with members, staff, and visitors.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting, carrying, and moving objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Excellent communication, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid certifications (course will be available for staff upon being hired).
  • Must pass local and national background check and pre-employment drug screening (in accordance with RCW 49.44.240).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous custodial or maintenance experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and floors.
  • Empty and dispose of trash and recycling appropriately.
  • Maintain cleanliness of common areas, such as hallways, lobbies, gyms, and classrooms.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
  • Respond promptly to cleaning emergencies or spills.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks, such as changing light bulbs, fixing minor leaks, or patching walls.
  • Report major maintenance or repair needs to the Director of Facilities or Club Director.
  • Ensure all cleaning supplies and equipment are properly stored and maintained.
  • Monitor inventory levels of cleaning supplies and request restocking as needed.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe environment.
  • Identify and report any safety hazards or security concerns to the appropriate person.
  • Lock and unlock facility doors as needed for events or daily operations.
  • Ensure proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment according to safety guidelines.
  • Collaborate with staff to ensure the facility meets the needs of various programs and activities.
  • Assist as needed in setting up and breaking down for events, programs, and activities.
  • Provide support for special projects and community events as needed.
  • Perform other custodial duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities or Club Director.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and a commitment to the Club’s mission and values.
  • Maintain a positive Boys & Girls Club culture with high energy, strong teamwork, and effective collaboration with other staff.

ENVIRONMENT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be frequently required to stand; walk; sit; bend; lift; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee will frequently lift or move equipment, products or supplies, up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to reliably commute between work locations.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position under sometimes stressful conditions; Vision sufficient to read printed materials; Hearing sufficient to conduct in-person and phone conversations; Speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in the normal conversational distance, on the phone, and in addressing groups; Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, walk and stand for a minimum of 4 hours, and to reach overhead; Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, from the club, or home site to site), to drive an automobile; Physical, mental, and emotional tolerance to be exposed to the noise generated by children/youth in an enclosed environment; Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions. High energy level, comfortable performing multi-faceted projects; superior interpersonal abilities-able to interact effectively with co-workers of all levels and with the representation of other organizations and institutions. Ability to communicate with diverse personalities, tact, maturity, and flexibility.
