CITY OF KILLEEN is Hiring a Veterinarian Near Killeen, TX

The Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to shelter animals, including spay/neuter surgeries and treatment of various medical conditions. Assists in developing, advancing, and implementing shelter medicine protocols and delivers and ensures humane medical treatment of all animals while in the care of the animal shelter. Manages, establishes, revises and implements work unity procedures and develops recommendations for policy changes. 
 
Leads the evaluation and establishment of shelter medical protocols.
 
Continually improves the medical management program and ensures high-quality medical care and services for shelter animals, including those temporarily in foster care, focusing on identification, treatment and prevention of health problems thereby increasing adoptions and decreasing adoption returns.
 
Makes recommendations and collaborates with the Director in the formulation of shelter medical objectives, practices, plans and decisions that influence operations to ensure optimal health of sheltered animals.
 
Oversees the maintenance of shelter drug and medical supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements.
 
Actively participates as a member of the management team; attends applicable meetings.
 
Performs duties in a manner which encourages attainment of goals, contributions, business, and programs.
 
Maintains effective communication with staff through daily contact, in scheduled meetings, informally or in writing, as needed to coordinate and direct medical functions of the shelter.
 
Provides guidance to staff for situations requiring immediate medical assistance.
 
Participates in interviewing and hiring decisions for medical staff.
 
Oversees that appropriate medical staff are certified in euthanasia.
 
Communicates directly with the Director regarding care of all shelter animals.
 
Treats people and animals with respect; contributes to effective teamwork; promotes intra and inter departmental cooperation; and fosters positive public relations.
 
Evaluates and determines the disposition of incoming animals.
 
Provides medical services to all shelter animals, including physical examinations, diagnostics, medical rounds, and treatments.
 
Performs sterilization surgeries and other surgical procedures for shelter animals.
 
Ensures appropriate medication is administered by medical staff.
 
Advises, performs, or oversees euthanasia performed within in the shelter. 
 
Provides on-call services for shelter animal emergencies.
 
Provides professional credibility to help all domestic pets.
 
Maintains appropriate licensing and completes required continuing education courses. Adheres to state regulations and organizational protocol regarding animal care, treatment advocacy, and the mission of Killeen Animal Services.
 
Takes immediate action to address any safety concerns or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
 
Maintains Departmental equipment, supplies, and facilities. Perform other duties as assigned.Education & Experience: 
  1. Current license in the State of Texas to practice veterinary medicine, 
  2. Current DEA license, 
  3. Two years experience in shelter medicine with high volume spay/neuter experience, preferred.
Special Requirements:
Employee must have a valid driver’s license by date of hire.
 
Be available weekends, holidays and after-hours, to assist and give direction on animal related issues. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Some knowledge of Animal Services principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment; working knowledge of animal restraint and care techniques,
2. Effective written and verbal communication skills,
3. Organizational, time management, and planning skills,
4. Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations; 5. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, 
5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and the public,
6. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions, 
7. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, 
8. Maturity with ability to use good judgment and display a professional manner,
9. Good analytical skills and ability to identify and access department issues/opportunities. Enjoys problem solving within existing resources,
9. Fostering a positive work environment. Be viewed as a motivator and leader. Experience in molding and developing staff into a cohesive team while holding individuals, and work units accountable for their results,
8. Ability to meet the special requirements listed below.
Tools and equipment used
Skill in operating: modern office equipment, including computer equipment and software programs; necessary tools and devices to capture and immobilize animals; use of automated information systems for tracking data and the generation of reports; and drive a motor vehicle safely.
 
.Any and all equipment within the Veterinary clinic and shelters.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision; and the ability to adjust focus.
