Willowwind School is Hiring a Kindergarten Teacher Near Iowa, IA

Kindergarten Teacher Position (In-person)

Willowwind School (WWS) is an independent, coeducational, progressive K—6 school founded in 1972 in Iowa City, Iowa. Under the general supervision of the Head of School, the K—6 teacher provides students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. The K—6 teacher will teach courses in their concentration. Through successful utilization of our progressive and project-based curriculum, students will be able to achieve individual academic success and develop 21 century competencies and skills. Applicants must be poised, punctual, and enthusiastic. They must communicate effectively and work well with others. In addition, they should demonstrate a love for teaching young children and serving families, as well as an ability to articulate the mission and vision of WWS. Our workday hours are 8:00am – 4:00pm. Specific dates of employment will be highlighted in the annual employee agreement.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university; graduate degree is desirable;
  • Iowa Teaching License - Elementary required or equivalent;
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States;
  • Completion of the state-required fingerprinting and criminal background check is required;
  • Demonstrate competency in assigned core academic subject area(s); state certification in subject areas is desirable;
  • Experience as a classroom teacher; strong candidates with less experience may be considered; and
  • Ability to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, school policies, and standards of professional conduct.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

General:

  • Continually strives to improve classroom methods, teaching techniques, increase knowledge of content subject matter, and interpersonal relationships;
  • Effectively displays the ability to work cooperatively with others;
  • Utilizes effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly. Possesses exceptional pedagogical skills and understanding;
  • Displays strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills;
  • Accepts and implements constructive suggestions or criticisms in a professional manner;
  • Utilizes technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process; and
  • Able to maintain confidential information pertaining to students, employees, volunteers, and the general operations of WWS.

Teaching:

  • Maintain a safe and respectful learning environment;
  • Develop effective and purposeful lesson plans, units, and curriculum;
  • Work in partnership with the Head of School and other faculty and staff for effective delivery of Willowwind program and content;
  • Differentiate lessons to meet diverse learning styles;
  • Design a range of assessment opportunities for students; and
  • Conduct all required testing.

Communication:

  • Provide effective communication with parents by phone, email, and in person via formal and informal meetings, including conferencing two times per year;
  • Create and update all academic reports (including but not limited to progress reports, 504s, IEPs);
  • Manage and update student files and anecdotal records; and
  • Support office staff in maintaining relevant content on WWS website or maintains a classroom website.

Leadership:

  • Model professionalism in and outside the classroom;
  • Represent WWS positively in the community and the greater community beyond;
  • Model conflict resolution at all levels; and
  • Model respect and responsibility.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Attend weekly all-faculty meetings;
  • Attend all evening/weekend school functions (including but not limited to Ice Cream Social, curriculum nights, Harvest Fest, academic events, etc.);
  • Monitor one lunch duty per week; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
