Job Summary:Furman University, founded in 1826, is a prestigious private liberal arts and sciences university located in Greenville, SC. The Furman University Endowment is critical to the university’s ability to achieve its goals. The annual distribution from the endowment funds a significant portion of the university’s annual operating budget. The Furman Investment Office is responsible for endowment management including asset allocation, the selection and termination of investment managers and monitoring performance of the portfolio, and reporting to the Furman University Investment Subcommittee. The endowment primarily partners with external investment managers and invests globally across all asset classes.
Job Description:Summary: The Investment Analyst will serve in a generalist role to assist the senior investment staff in all aspects of investment research, portfolio management, and endowment operations for the Furman University Endowment. The Investment Analyst will report directly to the Chief Investment Officer.
Responsibilities:
  • Works closely with the senior investment team to:
    • Implement decisions made by staff and the Investment Subcommittee.
    • Prepare comprehensive communications (monthly reports, quarterly meeting materials, project deliverables, etc.) for University officials, Investment Subcommittee members, other stakeholders as necessary.
    • Drafts, prepares, and/or presents reports for the senior investment team, Investment Subcommittee members, or other stakeholders as needed.
    • Actively participate in and prepare for external investment manager meetings.
    • Assists the senior investment team with qualitative and quantitative research across various investment strategies and for aggregate endowment performance.
    • Supports senior investment team members in developing and maintaining internal investment processes and performance reporting templates.
    • Networks with investment professionals of similar sized endowments, foundations, family offices, pensions, consultants, etc. to attain information on investment strategy, asset allocation; best practices and prospective investment managers.
    • Assists the University’s broader Finance function in preparing compliance materials for the University’s outstanding debt issues.
    • Maintains effective relationship with the University’s investment consulting firms.
    • Pursues professional development opportunities.
    • Perform a wide variety of tasks on an as needed basis.
    Relationships:
    • Reports directly to the Chief Investment Officer.
    • Daily contact with the Director of Investments and the Chief Investment Officer. Frequent contact with University financial staff to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information and make suggestions related to mutual goals.
    • Frequent contact with external investment managers; investment consultant; investment professionals for other endowments; and University Trustees.
    • Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address opportunities or situations that are not clearly defined. Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.
    • Expect collaborative efforts with VP for Finance and Administration and the Investment Subcommittee.
    Qualifications/Education/Skills:
    Required
    • Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, business, mathematics, or a related field.
    • Self-motivated, self-directed and passion for learning, particularly about financial markets and investing.
    • Strong organizational, analytical & interpersonal skills – written & verbal.
    • Meticulous attention to detail.
    • High ethical and professional standards.
    • High degree of humility.
    • Team orientation and strong interest in supporting the work of a university endowment.
    • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
    Preferred
    • 1-3 years of experience in the investment industry.
    • Pursuit of CFA and/or CAIA designations.
    • Experience using Evestment, Bloomberg, CapitalIQ, Dynamo or related software.
    • Experience with programming languages such as R, Python, and/or Ruby for data analysis and automation tasks. Familiarity with SQL for advanced database management and data retrieval.
    Work Conditions:
    • Work is performed in usual office conditions. Some travel possible (0 – 5% of the time).
