POSITION SUMMARY : Under the direction of the summer director, a summer counselor will provide leadership and implementation of the summer program.
This includes instruction of children in groups of up to 14 children. Provide a safe and fun environment for your group.
Plan and execute activities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Attend all orientation sessions prior to summer program. Understand and attend to the needs of children.
Guide, direct and Participate with your group in activities. Develop group cohesiveness. Assist in the social, mental, and emotional development of the children using values clarification techniques.
Maintain control of the children in your care at all times. Responsible for the health and safety of the children under your supervision.
Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, facilities, and the natural environment. Support and Assist other summer personnel in all areas of program operation and development.
Manage personal time in accordance with summer program policies. Maintain standards of conduct. All other duties as assigned by your supervisor YMCA COMPETENCIES (Leader) : Values-Accepts and demonstrates the Y’s values.
Relationships-builds rapport and relates well to others. Inclusion-Seeks first to understand the other person’s point of view and remains calm in challenging situations.
QUALIFICATIONS : High school graduate or equivalent One year or more of college preferred. Previous experience working with children preferably in a summer program setting Experience preferred in recreational group activities At least 18 years of age (The age minimum may be higher depending on state law and YMCA policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
