City of Geneseo is Hiring a Street Laborer Near Geneseo, IL

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform pavement repair work to streets, alleys, sidewalks and parking lots. Set forms for concrete pavement and structures; pour and finish concrete and make routine and permanent asphalt repairs and patches.
  • Operates jackhammers and pneumatic compacting equipment
  • Responsible for brush pickup and disposal
  • Responsible for trimming and assisting in street, sidewalk, building, and ground maintenance to include mowing and trimming
  • Performs on-going inspection, maintenance, and repair of departmental equipment and machinery
  • Digs up ground for ditches, sign posts, etc., using a pick, shovel, spade or other hand tool
  • Cleans drainage ditches and storm drainpipes
  • Operate trucks and other machinery when working on and traveling between jobs within the City
  • Assists during the winter months with snow removal and ice control
  • Perform work zone safety duties including signing of work zones and detours; utilize and wear proper protective safety gear and equipment.
  • Sets up and picks up barricades, lane cones, and warning signs to channel traffic around work crews
  • Ability to work overtime to attend to unexpected problems of the department
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
  • Other duties as assigned by the Street Foreman

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT ENTRY:

Additional qualifications may be specified and receive preference, depending upon the nature of the position.

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Possession of a Class B CDL license with an airbrake endorsement is required, obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • 1 year of experience in operation and routine maintenance of public works trucks and construction motor equipment and in road and sewer maintenance or related work
  • Ability to obtain appropriate pesticide applicator’s license within one year into role or assigned time frame per the PW director.
  • Reside within 15 miles of City Hall within 6 months of employment

Advanced education or technical training in a related field may substitute for experience as determined by the City

Competencies (as demonstrated through experience, training, and/or testing) :

  • Knowledge of automotive and construction equipment usage, maintenance, and related equipment
  • Techniques and methods of maintenance for all street equipment
  • Knowledge of maintenance, operation of equipment, small engines and minor carpentry work
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public
  • Ability to communicate orally in the English language
  • Ability to understand and comply with simple English written and oral instructions;
  • Work under pressure to meet tight time schedules and deadlines, and handle problems and tasks that come up simultaneously or unexpectedly
  • Ability to maintain professional composure when dealing with unusual circumstances
  • Strong customer service and service delivery orientation
  • Perform other essential and marginal functions as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS (Physical/Mental Demands):

With or without reasonable accommodation, requires the physical and mental capacity to perform effectively all essential functions. In addition to other demands, the demands of the job include:

  • Work frequently requires strenuous physical tasks, including bending, stooping and lifting and carrying items weighing 20-50 pounds
  • Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time
  • Prolonged operation of moving equipment both riding/walking over rough terrain
  • Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously (example; operating the clutch and accelerator on a 6-yard dump truck)
  • Lift arms above shoulder level
  • Operate power driven machinery such as jack hammer, tamper, or other equally sized equipment to repair City facilities
  • Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, and dust
  • This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to obtain a CDL with Illinois Department of Transportation physical exam. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  • Maintaining composure in dealing with authorities, clients, citizens, occasionally under conditions of urgency and in pressure situations
  • Must undergo and meet City standards for background and reference checks, controlled substance testing, and physical exams
  • Required ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently
  • Handling and being exposed to sensitive and confidential information
  • Regular talking and hearing
  • Close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
