Statement of the Job:
University of Maine at Fort Kent is seeking a full time Assistant Director of Facilities. The Assistant Director will directly supervise the facilities maintenance workers and coordinate the daily work assignments of the skilled trades staff. This position will manage the Facilities Management department in the absence of the Director. The Assistant Director will be responsible for communicating with both internal employees, staff, and students as well as outside entities doing business with UMFK regarding issues related to the Facilities Management Department.
Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the salary for this full time, salaried, non-represented position is $53,000 plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Additional benefits include medical, dental, vision, and tuition waiver programs for employees and dependents. Essential Duties/ Responsibilities (Note: The University reserves the right to change or assign additional duties as necessary.):

  • Under the direction of the Director of Facilities Management, supervises, coordinates, and manages skilled trades, facilities maintenance workers, grounds, and student workers to include prioritizing and assigning work; ensuring staff completes training or provides training; ensuring employees follow policies and procedures; maintains a healthy and safe working environment; makes hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendation.
  • Inspect, evaluate, and solicit from staff the condition of equipment and infrastructure and make recommendation to the Director for renovations and/or new construction.
  • Coordinates work orders.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of operational records, logs, reports and/or related documents. Opens and completes work orders on a tablet or desktop.
  • Monitors and maintains inventory. Requisitions supplies as needed.
  • Participates in complex or advanced department maintenance and operations activities.
  • Works under minimal supervision. Work requires the ability to plan or perform involved or technical work and requires considerable judgement, initiative, creativity, and/or ingenuity.
  • Communicates with students, faculty, and other campus departments regarding issues relating to operations work.
  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned.
  • Manages the motor pool. Responsible for ensuring a small fleet of vehicles. May drive or shuttle athletic teams or other groups as needed.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills preferably in a union environment.
  • Proven ability to administer multiple projects.
  • Hands-on mechanical, planning, forecasting, communication, and judgement skills.
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulation standards.
  • Independent judgement along with effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Proven organization, time management and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently, and accurately in a time constrained environment and maintain a high degree of productivity.

Work Schedule: Typically, Monday-Friday 6am-2:30pm though adjustments to schedule may be necessary to meet operational demands and needs of the University. On-call is required and carrying a University phone is required.

Work Environment: Varies daily. Possible exposure to noise, dust, and hazardous materials and environments. A mix of office and field work. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and/or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May be subjected to confined spaces, moving mechanical parts electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, bodily fluids and excrement, pets, varmints, and extreme temperatures.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Valid Maine Driver’s license – CDL preferred or willingness to obtain one.
  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • Relevant coursework in skilled trades or specialized training. Beyond high school preferred.
  • Five to seven years of professional relevant experience to include supervisory or managerial experience, in lieu of training.
