OverviewThe District Attorney's Office seeks an applicant for our Deputy District Attorney who is committed to seeking justice and ensuring the safety of our community in an equitable manner! Our staff has recently won awards for innovations to improve efficiencies and forward-thinking projects.
Our primary office is in Fort Collins with our second office in Loveland. In our district, we have Cache La Poudre and Big Thompson rivers, Horsetooth Reservoir, and the Rocky Mountain National Park.
Staff are encouraged to take 2 long lunches a week to exercise and enjoy our community which could be running on one of our many local trails, biking (Fort Collins is a Platinum-rated bicycle-friendly community with miles of dedicated bike lanes), or enjoying a yoga class in Old Town.
In addition to great benefits (medical, dental, vision) Larimer County provides a wellness clinic to staff for preventative health screening and coaching, primary care services, and physical therapy. We value the well-being of our staff and have a resiliency program with 13 clinicians who are readily available to all employees (appointments available as soon as the next day) plus we have trained peer support specialists in our office for anyone who needs to decompress.

  • Receives and reviews summons, or tickets filed by arresting officers, and reviews and examines the evidence, witness statements, determines whether a crime has been committed, the nature of the crime, and whether the evidence justifies prosecution.
  • Prepares briefs and legal opinions; conducts legal research; prepares reports and develops recommendations related to the District Attorney's Office policies, procedures, and operations.
  • Represents the County in criminal calendar proceedings including the scheduling of cases, plea negotiations, probation revocation hearings, motions, and sentencings.
  • Serves as prosecuting attorney for the jury and court trials.
  • Represents the County in evidence hearings.

We Are Looking For a Candidate That Will
  • Have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.
  • Know methods of legal research.
  • Perform legal work involving the use of independent judgment.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations , and policies.
  • Investigate and prosecute civil and criminal complaints.
  • Have knowledge of Present laws, facts, and arguments clearly and logically in written and oral form.
QualificationsAll candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required for the DDA I will be eliminated from the process.
  • No experience is required.
  • Equivalent to a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school required.
  • Current license to practice law in Colorado, or obtain it within two (2) months of hire required.

Supplemental InformationThis position requires regular appearances in court so predictable attendance is mandatory. T he typical hours/schedules of this position are 8-5, Monday-Friday with longer days possible for trials.

As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests, will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. Successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
