Job Description – Patient Account Specialist (RCM Team)
Classification – FSLA - Non-Exempt - hourly
Salary Grade/Level/Range
Level of experience, longevity, within current company pay structure.
Reports to
Revenue Cycle Manager
Summary/Objective
Under the general supervision of the financial counselor, the patient account specialist will learn and perform duties related to assessing, monitoring and resolving outstanding patient balances. The specialist works under the standards outlined in the practice collection policy.
Essential Functions
  • Review, verify, obtain and correct patient financial status and payor source information.
  • Research and resolve missing or conflicting information.
  • Audits patient accounts for accuracy.
  • Identify patient underpayments or overpayments and rectify accordingly.
  • Performs necessary maintenance to patient accounts in the billing system.
  • Assist in payment plan monitoring.
  • Evaluate and process bad debt accounts.
  • Performs collection follow-up activities.
  • Performs collection account reconciliation.
  • Report collection activity to the collection service company.
  • Prepare and process patient refunds.
  • Process and post special payments to patient accounts.
  • Other duties as assigned by financial counselor and/or RCM Manager.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • 1 years of experience working with patient accounts in either a medical office or a medical billing service.
  • Payment posting experience preferred.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and confidentially on all levels.
  • Ability to interpret billing procedures and assimilate information from computer billing software.
  • Ability to apply written guidelines and work practices.
Work Environment
This job operates in a medical office facility.
Physical Demands
This position requires the ability to sit for long periods of time, view computer screens for long period of time, answering calls on a multi-line phone system, writing, reading and note taking.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, varying hours between 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
