Location: Farmingdale, NY Category: Professional Posted On: Fri May 24 2024 Job Description:The Prevention Specialist, reporting to the Dean of Students, will provide leadership and operational oversight in Outreach and Prevention. Utilizing evidence-based practices and adhering to Federal/State guidelines, the role involves developing a proactive, comprehensive approach to identify at-risk students in areas such as mental health. The position includes supervision of prevention programs, collaborating with Student Engagement colleagues, faculty, staff, students, and community partners to address risk factors and promote protective factors related to student health and safety.
Responsibilities encompass assessment, capacity building, planning, implementing, and evaluating activities aligned with college prevention priorities.
Candidates should possess knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of college student development, population-based assessment, and evidence-based health education. A working knowledge of behavioral risk factors and health conditions affecting college students, including substance abuse, depression, and sexual assault, is essential for success in this role.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Interact with students in a therapeutic manner in addressing mental health requests and needs.
  • Collaborate with College Mental Health Services in referring and addressing behavioral concerns.
  • Coordinate and implement screening and brief intervention services for students on the campus to create enhanced awareness.
  • Facilitate trainings, workshops, and programs on mental health and awareness and preventive care.
  • Provide support accommodations and services based on the needs of the student.
  • Prepare and submit Prevention Program budgets, records, reports, and statistical data to the Dean of Students.
  • Collaborate as a team member in the Dean of Students Office
  • Coordinate and conduct mental health awareness and substance use surveys biannually.
  • Participates intentionally with other Prevention & Outreach team members, providing guidance and leadership when necessary.
  • Facilitate trainings, workshops, and programs on mental health, awareness, preventive care, and coping strategies.
  • Provide support accommodations and services based on the needs of the student.
  • Serve as a consultant to the coalition for community partnerships, strategic planning, and action plan development based on assessment results.
  • Stay informed and expand knowledge in college mental health, substance use, and prescription drug misuse.
  • Plan and coordinate prevention training for students, campus staff, coalition members, and community partners.
  • Collaborate with Long Island Prevention Resource Center and coalition members to develop data collection tools and methods for assessment and evaluation.
  • Oversee and coordinate screening and brief intervention services for students on campus.
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity and university initiatives supporting diversity and inclusion.
  • Utilize evidence-based practices, including Red Watch Band, BASICS, CBT, and Motivational Interviewing.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Residence Life, Student Engagement, and academic departments in providing mental health awareness and support for the diverse student populations.
  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and performance evaluation of subordinate personnel in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and applicable laws.
  • Supervisory responsibilities include, at a minimum, interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Conducts evaluation of health initiatives and population-level strategies to assess shifts in behavior change or health outcomes.
  • Supervises the development and implementation of campus-wide assessments to determine health needs, assets, and priorities.
  • Provide on-call support and triage mental health concerns.

Job RequirementsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in Public Health, Social Work, Psychology, Education or other related field.
  • At least two years of experience in mental health prevention.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with a diverse college aged population.
  • Experience in developing and implementing environmental strategies with a harm reduction approach with a focus on primary prevention.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a group in order to achieve institutional changes.
  • Experience providing mentorship to students who are engaged in experiential learning.
Additional InformationThis is a full-time UUP position.
  • For the first 10 working days, beginning Friday, May 24, 2024, and ending Friday, June 7, 2024, applications will be limited to UUP Farmingdale.

  • SALARY: $75,000 $3,087 in downstate location pay = $78,087 Total Compensation.
