Hours: 8 hours a week-(Thursday and Friday)

Position Summary:

The Occupational Health Nurse will work on site at West Fraser and manage basic first-aid, medical responses, case management for occupational and non-occupational injuries or illnesses, medical surveillance, training, safety, health and wellness, random drug screening, coordinate services for physicals, perform pulmonary function testing, and audiometric testing.

Qualifications: RN with at least 5 years’ experience.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

First Aid/Medical Response:

  • Basic First Aid – First aid and triage for injuries incurred at the facility and the assessment of the need to seek outside medical treatment.
  • Implementation of a plan of care and monitoring of the patient’s condition. When necessary, coordination of treatment at the appropriate medical facility.
  • Administration of treatment and consultation with doctor when necessary.
  • Provision of various forms of conservative medical treatment including heat, ice and range of motion as directed by medical directives and Occupational Health Physician.
  • Oversight of First Responder program/training.
  • Procurement and stocking of medical supplies for the medical/health service station.

Case Management for Occupational and Non-Occupational Injuries/Illnesses:

  • Coordination of early intervention and return to work activities for employees with occupational and non-occupational illnesses and injuries.
  • Monitoring of the progress of employees who are on workers compensation, disability, medical leave and FMLA. Review of written reports, surveys and applications and the making of recommendations to the facility regarding FMLA, ADA, STD, LTD and Workers Compensation issues.
  • Consultation with attending physicians, QRC’s (qualified rehab consultant) and other healthcare providers with the goal of returning employees to work as soon as possible. Maintenance of communication and a working rapport with local providers.
  • Accountability for ensuring that employees who return to work are capable of performing the essential job functions of their position, Coordination of FCEs (functional capacity evaluation) if needed.
  • Development and maintenance of essential job function documentation for ADA compliance.
  • Acting as a liaison between relevant company personnel and the employee to ensure that pertinent information is distributed to the right people in an appropriate, timely fashion.
  • Providing support to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), including the referral of employees as appropriate.
  • Providing full and appropriate documentation of patient care/consultation.
  • Maintaining the confidentiality of all employee medical information.

Medical Surveillance

  • Obtaining and interpreting physician reports.
  • Acting as a resource to the Safety and Human Resources departments in all medical matters.

Training:

  • Development and implementation of in-service training programs for injury prevention and injury care (i.e. back safety/proper lifting techniques, stretching), and other training if required (i.e., heat stress, BBP, etc)
  • Participation as a member of the Emergency Response Planning Team.
  • Participation in Emergency Response Team Meetings
  • Oversight of the First Responder/Emergency Response Training including AED/CPR, Bloodborne pathogens, First Aid & CPR and other training as required.
  • Assistance with emergency drills as appropriate.

Safety:

  • Education of employees on PPE use as directed by Norbord policy. Assistance with safety requirements, including use and recommendations of appropriate PPE.
  • Participation in safety meetings.
  • Assistance with ergonomic assessments and follow-up on safety and ergonomic projects.
  • Assistance with OSHA inspections if needed.

Health & Wellness:

  • Coordinate /Administration of flu shots for participating employees when vaccine is available (non-covered expense)
  • Development and administration of appropriate medical reports for both internal and external requirements.
  • Coordination of on-site health and wellness education such as smoking cessation coaching and consultations, nutritional education, etc.
  • Coordination of Biometric screening programs to include blood pressure screen, lipid profile, and blood sugar screening (testing supplies are non-covered expenses.)
  • Providing metabolic screening for body composition analysis (% body fat)
  • Providing nutritional coaching and consultations
  • Administration of Tetanus/Tdap and Hepatitis B immunizations
  • Potentially provide travel vaccines to employees that would be traveling to areas outside the U.S. or referral to appropriate facility for guidance.
  • Provision of health-related information to employees. (Provides mthly presentations/topics.)
  • Participation in the development of written medical, health and wellness programs.
  • Identification of opportunities for employee to improve their health and wellness.

Other Services:

  • Help coordinate Baseline and Annual Audiometric Testing
  • Coordination and fitting of custom fit hearing protection.
  • Coordinate with local physicians for RTW physicals.
  • Schedule Audiometric testing
  • Schedule Pulmonary Function Testing
  • Perform Fit Testing as needed
  • Ability to Work Flexible Schedule
  • Substance Abuse Policy - Drug and Alcohol Testing for Random/Post Incident

***Salary scales are a range of pay and offers are made to applicants based upon the requirements of the particular position. Applicants with “previous like skills” may not be given the same weight and consideration as “previous specific same skills”: i.e., For a Medical Receptionist position, “Previous clerical skills” may not be preferred over “Previous Medical Clerical Skills”.
