Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University is Hiring a Director of Campus Ministry Near Evanston, IL

Introduction

Sheil Catholic Center at Northwestern University serves the students, faculty, and staff of Northwestern University, in both Evanston and Chicago, as well as those who partner with us in our mission. Sheil engages a rapidly growing student community. Our engagement of students happens through authentic and inclusive personal accompaniment, vibrant worship, transformative learning, and opportunities for prophetic justice through service to the wider community and Church.

Position Summary

The Director of Campus Ministry assists the Chaplain and Director of the Sheil Catholic Center with the day-to-day functions and ministries of the Sheil Catholic Center especially overseeing all engagement of students through our presence on the Evanston and Chicago campuses of Northwestern University. The Director of Campus Ministry, who leads a team of two campus ministers, the Director of Transformative Learning, and the Coordinator of Music Ministry, leads bi-monthly Campus Ministry Team meetings and collaborates with other Sheil team members in ensuring a wholistic approach of accompaniment of our student community through worship, relationship, formation and service. The Director seeks to empower students to become leaders among their peers and missionary disciples of Jesus. The Director must be a practicing Catholic who possesses an understanding of Catholic tradition and the ability to vision and implement an organized approach for student engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Student Relationships and Accompaniment

· Available and willing to accompany all students through docile listening and dialogue. 

· Comfortable in being inconvenienced while working to engage with students throughout the course of the day who are in need or just stopping by.

· Build up Catholic awareness and the presence of the Newman Center on the campuses of Northwestern University.

· Form students in authentic discipleship to witness among their peers.

· Serve as a spiritual companion, as requested.

· Serves as Team Liaison and Advisor to the Catholic Student Association.

· Oversees, with the Campus Ministers, all orientation and graduation events for students.

· Research trends among college students and young adults to ensure we are authentically accompanying our students in growing in relationship with Jesus.

Administration and Supervision

· Reports to the Chaplain and Director of the Sheil Catholic Center.

· Enacts a comprehensive vision, with the Chaplain and Director of the Sheil Catholic Center, for student engagement at our locations in Evanston and Chicago.

· Supervise the Campus Ministry Team.

· Meet monthly with each member of the Campus Ministry Team.

· Facilitates Campus Ministry Team meetings.

· Participates in weekly team prayer and Full Team Meetings.

· Provides direction for all events which engage students.

· Manages the campus ministry budget.

· Welcomes and applies feedback to improve performance.

· Provide feedback and evaluation to Campus Ministry Team.

· Able to achieve goals and meet deadlines.

· Comfortable with learning necessary technologies used for ministry.

· Enhances the partnership with Northwestern University by regular attendance at religious partner meetings and volunteering for University events that allow for direct contact with students.

· Attends gatherings and meetings with the Archdiocese of Chicago and other campus ministry centers as requested.

Worship

· Collaborates with Team Members to ensure students are engaged in liturgical ministries.

· Attentive and responsive to the previous worship experiences of our students so that we are meeting their diverse spiritual needs.

· Be present before and after weekday and weekend liturgies, as possible.

· Lead Liturgy of the Word Services with Holy Communion in the absence of the Chaplain as assigned.

· Exercise leadership of prayer as needed and requested.

Retreats and Small Groups

· Collaborates with students and the Campus Ministry Team to plan the Fall Undergraduate Student Retreat and Spring Undergraduate Retreat.

· Collaborate with the Campus Ministry Team on the Graduate Student Retreat and Busy-Student Retreat.

· Collaborate with the Campus Ministry Team on Winter Day of Renewal.

· Develop content for and provide formation for student small groups.

Prophetic Justice and Service

· Support the Campus Minister who oversees all mission immersion and service experiences.

· Participate, when possible, in service opportunities with the students.

· Research new opportunities and partnerships for students to experience Catholic Social Teaching.

Transformative Learning

· Collaborate with the Director of Transformative Learning in engaging students in faith formation opportunities.

· Teach, as available and requested, as a part of the Christ the Teacher Institute and the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults.

Mission

· Collaborate with the entire Sheil Team in engaging the mission of the Sheil Catholic Center through community relationships, potential new donors, and grant writing.

· Participate in other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

· Master's degree in appropriate field preferred; all related experience considered.

· Minimum of three years of ministry experience, young adult experience preferred.

· Passion for serving and accompanying University students.

· Practicing Catholic demonstrating a high level of professional and ethical conduct.

· Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the Sheil Catholic Center.

· Highly collaborative work ethic.

· Aware of Church teachings related to Campus Ministry and trends among young people.

· Experience in budget management preferred.

· Experience in supervising professional staff preferred.

Work Hours

· There is no real set “work” schedule with ministry at the Sheil Catholic Center. The goal is to be present when the students are here and to be available to them. The weekly schedule looks different depending on the events of the week, but hours are flexible, especially to ensure days off, given the changing schedule. Sunday and evening hours are an expectation.
