Job SummaryDr. Thuy Le, MD, PhD, is looking for a curious, motivated junior researcher to join her team as a biostatistician level I. Candidates with background and interest in interest in infectious diseases and global health are preferred but no a requirement. The junior will be working as part of a team on a project focused on advancing the diagnosis and treatment of major invasive fungal infections in patients with advanced HIV disease, including talaromycosis, histoplasmosis, and cryptococcosis.
The individual will lead and/or assist other team members in performing basic statistical analyses and programming for several ongoing diagnostic and biomarker studies. The individual will assist a Data Manager in data quality control and assist the lead statistician in the statistical analyses of an upcoming multi-site clinical trial of treatment for talaromhycosis (starting in December 2024), with lots of guidance and support.
This is an opportunity for a new graduate with a master degree in Biostatistics or master in epidemiology / public health with a focus on biostatistics to emerge themselves in a highly interdisciplinary team science environment combining laboratory development and testing of novel diagnostics, pre-clinical evaluation of novel therapeutic strategies, to diagnostic and therapeutic clinical trials. The individual will have the opportunity to develop themselves both in quantitative science skills as well as research skills with the potential to co-lead research projects from designing studies to data acquisition, data analysis, data visualization, and publications as first or co-first authors of papers.
The individual will be closely mentored by Dr. Le, a team manager, and senior statisticians working on various projects. The individual will have the wider support of research-oriented activities in the Division of Infectious Disease, Duke University Department of Medicine, as well as in the Duke Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics. The individual will have weekly meetings as a team and weekly meetings with Dr. Le and senior statisticians to receive a high level of mentorship.
Specific tasks
  • Under guidance, generate basic analyses in accordance with statistical analysis plans, descriptive statistics and basic test statistics. Performs analysis of basic data requests, generating statistical modeling results and documenting summary of analyses to present them to supervisors. 16%
  • Learn new statistical methods and apply new skills to future projects.12%
  • Design with guidance data analysis set specifications. Write R code, finding and correcting errors and validating output and results. Demonstrated understanding of clinical trial/project data collection processes and data sets, and shares knowledge with collaborators. 12%
  • Serves in a supporting role for a Data Manager, providing assistance with data queries and data cleaning as needed. 12%
  • Serves in a supporting role for a senior Statistician in clinical trial/project, with consultation or assistance as needed. Demonstrates understanding of how own trial/project-related tasks contribute to the role of the statistics team on the trial/project. 12%
  • Attends trial/project team meetings when appropriate and participates in the statistical team responsible for designing and validating analysis data sets, programs, and statistical output products (tables, listings, figures). 12%
  • Adheres to standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the functional department as they apply to documentation and validation of clinical research statistics. 12%
  • Accomplish project responsibilities with supervision or regular support as well as collaborate and communicate effectively with others. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. 12%
