The Detroit Institute of Arts is Hiring a Senior Accountant Near Detroit, MI

JOB TITLE: Senior Accountant 

DEPARTMENT: Accounting

REPORTS TO:Director of Accounting

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Exempt

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:Partial

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under the guidance of the Director of Accounting, the Senior Accountant is responsible forvarious financial functions including accounting, financial reporting, budget preparation, and audit and tax activities. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of both short-term and long-term departmental and organizational plans, strategies, and internal controls.
  • Facilitate the completion of monthly financial close journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements in accordance withgenerally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Prepare, interpret, and summarize financial data and reports for use by management, funding authorities, and outside stakeholders.
  • Identify and analyze trends and providetimely reports and interpretation of analysis to management team.
  • Act as a liaison to one or more divisions, supporting the division through budget preparation to understanding and analysis of the division’s monthly and annual financial reports.
  • Facilitate the annual budget development process including meeting with department heads and providing guidance and recommendations.
  • Direct internal and external audits while ensuring data integrity and timeliness.
  • Comply with all regulatory filing and reporting requirements including but not limited to, filing statements and reports, tax forms, 1099’s, and unclaimed property reports.
  • Provide technical accounting support to internal stakeholders and resolve or recommend solutions to complex problems.
  • Remain current in non-profit accounting and GAAP accounting rules, regulations, policies, and reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate the organization’s insurance coverage.
  • Apply DIA values to interactions to support a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Bachelor’s degree in accountingrequiredSeven (7) years of experience in accountingrequired. Non-profit experience preferred. CPA Certification preferred. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial analysis, and reporting. 
  • General knowledge of accounting principles for the non-profit industry preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong customer service.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills to work across departments and divisions internally and with diverse stakeholders externally.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to plan, manage, prioritize, and complete multiple on-going projects to meet deadlines and goals. 
  • Demonstrated research and analysis skills to identify critical information and complete projects and goals.
  • Ability to provide information, ideas, and instructions clearly, effectively, and professionally through talking or writing.
  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events.
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Office 365.
  • Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive, and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
