QualificationsGENERAL SUMMARYUnder general supervision, performs duties in the Fire Services area of assignment. Personnel will receive on-the-job training in additional specialized areas in which certification is sought. Work is reviewed by observation, evaluation, reports and public comment. Knows and gains understanding of the Airport's Safety and Security regulations and takes proactive measures (see something, say something) to immediately report safety and security violations.
Principal Duties And ResponsibilitiesDepending on Fire Services area of assignment as determined by departmental requirements, and at the discretion of the department, may perform any or all of the following:
  • Responds to calls and performs general fire/rescue work including but not limited to emergency medical scenes, fire incidents, environmental and hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue incidents, search and rescue operations and other fire service related emergency requests to all locations on the airport and off the airport in support of mutual aid agreements as needed.
  • Performs structural and aircraft fire rescue duties including but not limited to responding to alarms, deploying and connecting hoses, raising and climbing ladders, ventilating structures, operating extrication equipment, rescuing victims at automobile accidents, industrial accidents, burning aircraft and/or buildings, and renders emergency medical care when necessary.
  • Performs as an emergency equipment driver: inspects, drives, and maintains automotive fire fighting fire/rescue apparatus and related equipment.
  • Operates a Mobile Intensive Care Unit and performs the duties of a paramedic responding to medical emergencies to treat patients according to medical protocol established by the Department contracted Medical Control provider; transports patients to a medical facility; and coordinates activities related to a disaster response including but not limited to triage, patient treatment, patient tracking and transport.
  • Maintains station, grounds and facilities.
  • Performs as an instructor for in-station training.
  • Develops pre-fire plans for airport buildings.
  • Provides continuous monitoring for hazards in emergency weather conditions.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.
Minimum Requirements
  • At least eighteen (18) years of age at date of application.
  • Citizen of the United States of America.
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license or equivalent from another state.
  • Possession of a Texas Commission on Fire Protection Certification as a basic structural firefighter and Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) Certification as an EMT
  • Possession of, or ability to complete the requirements for a Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) Paramedic certification within established timeframe.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the assigned area.
  • Skill in use of assigned equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to pass a written examination.
  • Ability to pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT).
  • Ability to pass a psychological examination.
  • Ability to pass a truth verification examination and/or polygraph.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation which includes criminal and driving records checks.
  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination and drug test.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to evaluate immediate life-threatening situations and make quick decisions for stabilization of an incident.
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to changing conditions, situations and pressures.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights greater than ten (10) feet, in extreme temperatures and weather conditions, and for long periods of time requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.
  • Ability to perform duties requiring frequent pulling of 55 pounds or more sometimes for long distances.
  • Ability to perform work while lifting arms above shoulder level.
  • Ability to use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing.
  • Ability to interact cooperatively and harmoniously with personnel in his/her assigned station, Department of Public Safety, other Board departments, and the public.
  • Ability to attend continuing education classes to assure minimal standards are met as outlined by the Texas Fire Commission and the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English in a manner which is understandable/discernable to others in the current work force.
  • Ability to complete written reports accurately.
  • Ability to work various shifts.
  • Ability to conform to Department standards.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport's Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.
  • This is a designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport's Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a drug test prior to employment and to submit to drug screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.
  • Possession of, or the ability to complete the requirements for a Texas State certification in basic structural and aircraft rescue firefighting as prescribed by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an FBI Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance.
