Who We Are

Legal Aid Society’s mission is to advance, defend, and enforce the legal rights of low-income and vulnerable people in order to secure for them the basic necessities of life. Our staff includes national authorities in the fields of domestic violence, housing, consumer law, federal income taxation, health advocacy, non-profit group representation, social security, and special education.

Opportunity

The Managing Attorney will oversee day-to-day operations at our Cookeville, TN office, leading a team of 8, including 4 attorneys. This role involves providing legal representation to eligible clients, managing a diverse caseload in areas aligned with the candidate’s expertise and office needs. The Managing Attorney will engage in various legal fields, administrative advocacy, and community education, ensuring adherence to program standards and the Code of Professional Responsibility.

Additionally, the Managing Attorney will represent the office in the local community, build relationships with leaders, and identify opportunities for outreach, effectiveness, systemic impact, and new funding. This rewarding position is ideal for a proactive individual committed to making a difference.

As a non-profit, this position is funded through grants, requiring adherence to specified goals and outcomes. The position is funded for the grant duration, with potential modifications upon renewal.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality legal representation per the Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Review and supervise the work of support staff for attorney clients.
  • Maintain accurate client files, following case management policies.
  • Engage in the firm’s community education program by speaking with groups and updating materials.
  • Supervise all office employees and volunteers according to firm policies.
  • Hire and onboard office staff with the Hiring Manager and HR Director, and with Executive Director approval.
  • Collaborate with the private bar and LAS Volunteer Lawyer Program to promote involvement.
  • Ensure staff compliance with grant requirements and regulations by reviewing cases regularly.
  • Foster collegial and professional relationships within the firm.
  • Participate in internal committees to enhance operations and respond to client surveys and grievances.
  • Adhere to the Legal Services Corporation’s Performance Criteria and ABA Standards for Civil Legal Aid.
  • Promote the professional development of all office staff.

Who We are Looking for:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) with at least 4 years of legal practice and supervisory experience.
  • Admitted to practice in Tennessee, eligible for reciprocity, or willing to take the next bar exam.
  • Excellent research, writing, and advocacy skills, with basic proficiency in Windows, Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including client interviews and crisis assistance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to prioritize, plan, problem-solve, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure.
  • Capable of setting and maintaining staff expectations in a fast-paced environment while adhering to ethical guidelines.
  • Experienced in change management and intergenerational culture building. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
