COVID Notification :

The Dental Assistant reports to the MSSI Dentist and will be supervised by the Dentist while performing fieldwork.

The Dental Assistant will deliver services in any one of three settings :

1) Field Health Unit

2) Small medical / trauma hospitals

3) Large medical / trauma hospital and assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a Dentist or physician.

Responsibilities :

  • At the direction of the Dentist or a site medical director, the Dental Assistant prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations, sterilizes, and disinfects instruments and equipment, and takes dental radiographs.
  • Obtains and updates patients’ dental records and prepares and lays out instruments and materials required to treat each patient.
  • Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations, sterilizes and disinfects instruments and equipment, and takes dental radiographs.

  • Makes patients comfortable in the dental chair and prepares them for treatment.
  • Assists by handing instruments and materials to dentists and keeping patients' mouths dry and clear by using suction hoses or other devices.
  • Instruct patients on postoperative and general oral healthcare.
  • Prepares materials for impressions and restorations, and processes dental x-rays as directed by a dentist.
  • May remove sutures; apply topical anesthetics to gums or cavity-preventive agents to teeth.
  • May remove excess cement used in the filling process, and place dental dams to isolate teeth for treatment.
  • Orders and maintains an inventory of supplies.
  • Performs clerical functions related to dental activities.

  • 2 years minimum Dental Assistant experience is required.
  • Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)certification or state license is required.
  • Must have a valid US passport.
  • Must have completed an approved Dental Assistant course, diploma, certificate, associate degree, or military training including : Office radiology trainingFamiliarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the dental field is required.
  • Must have and maintain current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • All healthcare providers must have current clinical experience in direct patient care and have worked a minimum of 6 of the last 12 months in a desired career field.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS :

  • Must have a valid, current U.S. Driver’s License.
  • Must have a valid US Passport with no less than 6 months remaining before expiration.
  • Requires a favorable security background check and drug screen.
  • Must sign an International Assignment Agreement (IAA) and is bound to the terms and conditions of the IAA.
  • Must be current in all required certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

  • Must meet pre-deployment physical requirements.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods.
  • The location of services may at times be in remote, austere, or challenging environments.
  • May require bending, stooping, and lifting as required for patient care and transport.

The Medical Services Support in Iraq (MSSI) Program Manager establishes a clinically safe and professionally managed healthcare environment and provides primary health care as well as resuscitative surgical care in accordance with U.

S. or equivalent medical standards on a 24-hour basis, 365 days of the year to Chief of Mission (COM) personnel U.S. Embassy Baghdad.
