Rate of Pay: $44282 - $53690

Summary

Under the supervision of the Street and Solid Waste Department Superintendent and Foreman, Maintenance Worker II safely performs tasks related to the functions of the Street and Solid Waste Departments.

Starting salary - $44282-$53690 Depending on qualifications


Essential Job Functions

  • Perform basic maintenance and preventative maintenance on all street and solid waste vehicles and equipment under the direct supervision of the Superintendent and foreman, to perform, but limited to the following:
    • Engine oil / hydraulic oil and filter changes. Fuel, air, and cabin filter changes.
    • Replacement of hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic lines, and fittings.
    • Replacement of all moving parts on side load sanitation truck masts/lift structures.
    • Radiator and HVAC refrigeration service.
    • Minor electrical repairs and wiring.
    • Hydraulic and air brake service and replacement.
    • Minor engine repairs: Replace spark plugs, plug wires, batteries, etc.
  • With appropriate training, safely operates heavy equipment, including motor grader, front-end loader, skid loader, backhoe, street sweeper, dump trucks and sanitation trucks.
  • Operate basic hand tools, power tools, chain saws, welders, torches, weed-eaters and mowing equipment.
  • Operating specialized equipment such as pothole patching machine, brush chipper, brick saws and cutting and welding equipment, herbicide spraying equipment, and ULV mosquito sprayers.
  • Minor welding and fabrication.
  • Repair and maintenance of rotating assemblies: Augers, PTOs, and drive shafts.
  • Repair and maintenance of suspensions: Shocks, leaf springs, airbags, etc.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Texas Class A CDL, preferred
  • Hold an EPA Section 608 Technician Certificate in refrigeration or obtain within 12 months
  • Hold a TDA herbicide license or be able to obtain within 12 months

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The majority of work is performed indoors in a well-equipped shop. However, there will be many instances where work outdoors in all types of weather may be required.

  • Must be able to drive vehicles such as pickups, dump trucks, or heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to climb ladders up to 12’ high.
  • Must be able to easily manipulate hand and power tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, shovels, picks, saws, drills, grinders, etc.
  • Must be capable of lifting and handling objects weighing up to 50 lbs. without assistance.

Travel for the position is considered minimal. There may be occasional travel required for training. Also, some travel may be required to obtain supplies and equipment.

Education and Experience

EDUCATION:

  • A High School Diploma or GED is required

EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 years of verifiable vehicle, fleet, or heavy equipment maintenance experience
