I. Position Summary
The Counselor is responsible to provide evidence based and culturally informed direct service hours to a
diverse student body seeking assistance from the Student Counseling Center. The counselor will conduct
initial assessments, provide interventions and techniques in service to the student population. This
position requires timely and accurate clinical documentation, with special attention to risk management in
order to contribute to students’ mental wellness. Because this office supports campus well-being, this
position involves developing positive relationships and collaborative programming with faculty, staff, and
students toward promotion of a campus culture of wellbeing. This office is composed of support
staff/graduate interns in order to fulfill and enhance Malone University’s mission and goals. This position
reports to the VP for Student Development.
II. Essential Responsibilities:
1. The University Counselor primarily provides direct service hours to students in the form of
individual therapy, group therapy, tele-therapy, and consultation hours.
2. Counselors are also responsible for attending staff meetings, obtaining appropriate supervision,
working towards licensure or maintaining licensure once obtained, and engaging in opportunities
for increased education.
3. Provides individual, group and telehealth counseling for Malone students.
4. Obtains appropriate intake/diagnostic information and develops treatment goals.
5. Maintains progress notes and provides appropriate initial assessment and termination
summaries for each client.
6. Provides appropriate consultation and referral as needed.
7. Obtains appropriate releases for on and off-campus communication as needed.
8. Appropriately maintains confidentiality.
9. Appropriately maintains security of client files, individual offices, and the counseling center as a
whole.
10. Appropriately seeks supervisory input regarding cases, and regularly engages with other
counselors on staff to gain additional resources and perspectives.
11. Continues to engage in learning opportunities through online resources, reading books and
journal articles, and seeking resources from other counselors in the counseling center.
12. Appropriately assesses suicidal ideation and self-harm, creates safety plans as needed, and
consults with supervisor or Dean(s) in Student Development Dept. as needed.
13. Provides on-call support (on a rotation) and safety assessments for emergencies and crises in
the Malone community.
14. Discuss fully with supervisor and/or Dean(s) in Student Development any crisis that may lead to
hospital admission, involuntary removal from school, or a need to inform parents. Develops a
plan with appropriate employees and student(s).
15. Engages in additional University programs and presentations as desired.
16. Fulfills other tasks as assigned.

VI. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must exhibit a personal understanding of, and operate in concert with the Mission
Statement, Foundational Principles and Educational Goals of the University.
Doctoral degree (PhD/PsyD) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from APA accredited
program and APA accredited internship preferred; Master’s degree in counseling or
related field required.
Must hold a current Ohio license as a Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC), Licensed
Independent Social Worker (LISW), or Licensed Psychologist, and hold the supervisory
credential as a counselor or social worker.
Must have a minimum of five (5) years counseling experience and three (3) years
supervisory experience.
Demonstrated successful experience in provision of counseling services to college
students. Knowledge of developmental trends and concerns of undergraduates and
graduate students.
Demonstrated commitment to cultural competence and demonstrated successful
experience in provision of psychological services to underrepresented and marginalized
groups.
Strong case formulation, assessment and treatment skills, including the ability to work
with a diversity of clients, clinical issues and levels of impairment.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills, able to dialogue effectively with a
wide range of students, faculty and staff
Demonstrated ability to collaborate collegially with a multidisciplinary staff, both within
Counseling and throughout the University community
Ongoing pursuit of self-knowledge and understanding of own personal factors affecting
clinical work.
