St. John's Seminary is Hiring a Gardener Near Camarillo, CA

Job Summary:
St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo is looking for a full-time gardener to begin immediately. The Seminary’s grounds include, but are not limited to, landscaped areas, roadways and paths, irrigation systems, and two residential properties. This position is an essential member of the Seminary's facilities team and will work closely with the Facilities Manager helping to ensure the grounds and facilities are pristine. The ideal candidate has landscaping, gardening, and groundskeeping experience, well-developed people skills, and a history of providing the highest level of service. Working in a seminary environment is preferred, but not required.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Ensure the high levels of cleanliness, beauty, and maintenance of the Seminary's historic grounds; duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Mow, edge, trim, and water lawns, fields, residential properties, and other turf grounds; edge walkways; hoe and pull weeds and rake leaves; sweep litter from walks, streets, parking lots, driveways, and other assigned areas.
  • Plant, cultivate, prune, spray, fertilize and irrigate flowers, trees, grass, hedges, and shrubs; water various ground areas by hand or by operating the irrigation system as required.
  • Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up and removing paper, trash, trimmings and debris from grounds areas, parking lots, streets, athletic fields, and other assigned areas; empty waste receptacles.
  • Report needs for repairs or unsafe conditions; ensure that storage/stockrooms are orderly and comply with inventory controls and fire insurance regulations.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as mowers, edgers, blowers, sprayers, trucks, backhoes, excavators, skip loaders, tractors, trimmers, chainsaws, shears, trenchers, grinders, and line marking machines; utilize standard gardening hand tools; replace blades and fluids as needed; drive a vehicle to conduct work.
  • Maintain and perform inventory of parts, tools, equipment, etc.
  • Apply pest control methods to eradicate weeds and other pests according to established procedures as assigned.
  • Assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation systems as assigned; adjust, repair and replace sprinklers; assist with digging holes and trenches.
  • Assist with other grounds maintenance and repair activities including tree removal, tree topping, fence repair, general concrete repair and others as requested.
  • Load, unload, haul and transport supplies, clippings, debris, materials, and equipment as required.
  • Meet schedules and timelines as needed, including garden preparedness for special functions such as the Priest Retreat.
  • May need to purchase off campus supplies, parts, etc. for the gardening department.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, faculty, seminarians, administration and vendors.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Facilities Manager

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Walking or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Seeing to perform gardening and grounds work.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling heavy objects as assigned by position.
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.
  • Climbing ladders.
  • Heavy physical labor, over 40 lbs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in grounds care.
  • A focus on maintaining a safe workplace.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well with a variety of people.
  • Familiarity with using gardening chemicals and pesticides.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $21.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
