Job SummaryOperates a variety of large sanitation trucks and other heavy equipment for the collection of garbage, debris, and other waste along residential/commercial routes within the City of Bryan. Considerable skill and dexterity are required to operate the vehicle in confined spaces and heavy traffic situations and to operate hydraulic lifting and packing machinery.
Essential Job Functions
  • Operates a large mechanized sanitation truck and/or other heavy equipment. (front/side/rear-load sanitation truck, boom loader truck, dump truck, street sweeper, etc.); receives and follows a specific sequence on an assigned daily residential or commercial route.
  • Judges proper positioning and alignment of the truck; operates controls for swing, lift, bucket rotation, and grapple in the collection of waste near mailboxes, overhead utilities, and other vehicles; changes gripper mechanism to accommodate different size containers and compresses waste.
  • If assigned to brush and bulky waste collection, loads into rear-loading trucks, chippers, or other equipment used for green waste management.
  • Assesses areas within the City of Bryan and makes a determination as to what type clean up (trash, litter, brush) needs to be done.
  • Collects litter from roadways as part of residential litter collection program.
  • Communicates with citizens on ways to improve community appearance and educates about the City’s ordinances and policies in regards to Solid Waste issues.
  • Assists with brush, bulky, yard waste and recycling operations when necessary.
  • Ensures legal load capacity of waste collected and transports to a landfill for disposal in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Performs job duties skillfully, safely, and according to traffic laws and regulations.
  • Follows personnel and department policies and operating procedures; shows respect, tact, and courtesy in dealings with co-workers and the general public; and behaves in a manner that does not obstruct or hinder other employees from completing their duties.
  • Responds to customers regarding their collection concerns and provides general information on collection services; communicates City ordinances and policies to educate on proper disposal procedures as needed.
  • Completes daily report forms on vehicle and collection route sheets.
  • Provides support as needed during special events and activities involving the delivery, setup/removal of sanitation containers, and other special event/activity tasks as needed.
  • Performs a daily, routine inspection of the refuse collection vehicle before and after each route. Completes daily report forms on vehicle and collection route sheets.
  • Ensures the vehicle is properly maintained, cleaned, and fueled; performs minor repairs and reports the need for major repairs.
  • Operates other related sanitation equipment and assists in recycling efforts as needed.
  • Assists in training other employees in the safe and efficient operation of vehicles and equipment and in learning various residential and commercial collection routes.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Responds regularly and promptly to work.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED .
  • At least three (3) years of work experience, preferably involving driving a large vehicle and/or heavy equipment.
Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may be considered.

  • Comply with all City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and the initiative to broaden skills and take on new responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance and utilize leave responsibly to ensure sufficient coverage of departmental operations.
  • Provide management with sound, positive advice, and information concerning the incumbent’s area of responsibility.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements
Requires a Texas Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver’s License ( CDL ) with a good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system. CDL must be maintained during employment.
Physical Demands
Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, and using hands and fingers to operate equipment and to lift or move objects up to 50 pounds, or more with the use of proper equipment.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily in a large sanitation truck. While in the field this position faces exposure to traffic hazards, inclement weather, temperature extremes, dust, pollen, odors, fumes, electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, loud noises and vibration, hazardous materials and pathogenic substances through the operation of equipment and handling of waste/refuse.
Equipment
Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
Equipment may include but is not limited to: phone, computer, printer, copier, and various other office equipment, truck (side/front/rear-loader, grapple truck, haul truck, etc.), street sweeper, chipper, two-way radio, shovel, rake, broom, and power/hand tools.
