Brooklyn Heights Montessori School is Hiring a Music teacher Near Brooklyn, NY

Brooklyn Heights Montessori School offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum built on the philosophy of Maria Montessori to children aged two years through eighth grade.

Students work and learn in mixed-age classes led by teaching teams of thoughtful and well-trained professionals. The students have exposure to a full range of academic and artistic courses.

BHMS also offers an after-school program and a summer day camp. The School is housed in a beautiful facility in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn and is ideally located for convenient access to all parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

All School Music Teacher Early Childhood through Middle School Start Date : Late August 2024 Reports to : VAPA Coordinator Brief Description : The Music Teacher will work in conjunction with the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Team, VAPA Coordinator to teach music to students in the Twos, Preschool, Kindergarten, Lower and Upper Elementary, and Middle School programs (students in grades EC-8) in accordance with the BHMS mission, the Statement of Diversity, the principles of Montessori educational philosophy and practices, the curriculum, and the policies of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School.

This position is full-time. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to : Provide a high standard of care and teaching to students during school hours, including vigilance around both safety and learning Teach foundational music rhythmic and melodic skills;

teach a wide range of music techniques, genres, vocal coaching, variety of instruments, composition, and improvisation Teach and prepare lessons and review curriculum with a DEIB lens collaboration VAPA team for the Twos, Preschool, Kindergarten, Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle School students Design and teach specialty classes for 6th-8th graders such as Songwriting, Video Game Music, Choral Band, Percussion and Orff Ensemble, Acapella to Ukulele, MusicLab Serve as the music director for a yearlong Middle School Collaborative Production (play or musical) including running after-school rehearsals Prepare, rehearse, and lead winter and spring all-school music assemblies and Elementary presentations Maintain student records with regard to attendance, achievement, and Conference and reports Maintain a prepared environment in the classroom and other areas used for instruction Attend and participate in school-wide evening meetings, such as Back-to-School Night, Parent Education, Community events, and others Attend and participate in VAPA, Faculty, and Staff, and program meetings as indicated on the school calendar Establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with students, parents, and other teachers and school personnel Be in attendance at school in accordance with the times set forth in the letter of agreement Prepare annual statement of goals and objectives for professional development and evaluation Comply with the established policies and procedures of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School as stated in the Faculty & Staff Handbook Model as fully as possible the values in the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School Mission Statement, Diversity Statement, and Community Norms Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by VAPA Coordinator, the Head of Elementary Programs, the Assistant Head of School, or Head of School Skills and Requirements : Bachelor's Degree in Music or Music Education required, Masters preferred.

Teaching certificate, Kodály or Orff Certification preferred. Minimum 3 years, full-time, experience teaching Early Childhood through Middle School students Experience leading student instrumental and / or vocal groups, leading a band, and music directing performances.

Proficiency in either piano, ukulele guitar, or another accompanying instrument. Strong classroom management skills. Knowledge of diverse classical and modern music styles and techniques.

Experience in musical theater and concert productions. Strong curriculum mapping and assessment skills. Strong organizational skills.

Strong collaboration skills. Montessori experience, preferred. Strong work ethic and sense of humor. Lively curiosity, joy in working on challenging, fun material with students.

Connection to the BHMS Music program’s core values of generosity, fearlessness, and respect. Experience with any or all of the following are also desirable : Kodály, Orff, or Dalcroze Training and / or Certification, Folk music, diverse cultural and social music styles, classical music, choral, ukulele, orff, piano, guitar, percussion, composition, improvisation, music notation.

Knowledge of Digital Audio Work such as Bandlab for Education, Soundtrap, and notation software such as Noteflight, Flat io.
