Under the administrative direction and general supervision of the Laboratory Administrative Director, the Medical Laboratory Assistant performs laboratory procedures in phlebotomy (all ages), specimen collection, specimen processing and waived testing. Performs appropriate clerical and computer functions as required to perform duties. Performs other duties as assigned. These procedures exclude any which are performed only by certified/licensed personnel under COLA and CMS-CLIA regulations.
· Develop and maintain phlebotomy skill to include venipuncture, capillary puncture and arterial punctures as appropriate for the patient requiring the procedure.
· Follow established procedure for identification of patients, specimen collection, labeling and handling. Collects and properly label specimens for Blood Bank testing.
· Processes specimens utilizing protocols and technical knowledge.
· Performs quality control, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting protocols to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, procedures.
· Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correcting the problem or notifying the laboratory section supervisor or laboratory administrative director.
· Documenting all corrective actions taken when system deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
· Follows established safety practices including biohazards, exposure control plan (blood-borne pathogens), infection control to include universal precautions, employee right to know (hazardous chemicals), and chemical hygiene standard.
· Promotes effective working relationships and works effectively as part of a department / unit / team inter and intra departmentally to facilitate the department/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
· Attends all in-service education as required by hospital policy.
· Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
